Replace any portions of the deck that are unacceptable or in poor condition. See CertainTeed's Shingle Applicator's Manual for full details. The existing WSU must have a smooth, clean surface. Nail holes can be present, but all shingles, nails, etc. must be removed and the existing WSU surface swept clean. When applying WinterGuardTM Sand or WinterGuardTM Granular, the surface of the existing WSU must be primed with an ASTM D41 asphalt primer in order to achieve proper adhesion.
