GARAGE DOOR SIDEWALLS The garage door sidewalls mentioned in the building department comments were initially considered for use in the lateral design system. Due to the insufficient aspect ratio of these sidewalls, the lateral design of the garage structure was treated as a three sided or .open ended" structure with a horizontal roof diaphragm. Section 2315.1 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code allows for the use of one-story wood frame open-ended structures provided that calculations show the appropriate denection criteria for the horizontal I roof diaphragm. This office believes that due to the limited length to the garage door sidewalls, a horizontal diaphragm is a viable alternative to four-sided shear wall design. Calculations performed by this office show that the roof diaphragm is adequate to transfer the design lateral loads to the other supporting walls of the garage.
