Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) requires an approved inspection prior to installation of ANY roof coverings and is require on the entire roof when spaced or board sheathing with ANY gap exceeding one half inch exists. The posts bear on an exposed 8" concrete foundation wall. The footing below the wall was not visible, but based on typical construction practices can be assumed to be a minimum of 16" wide, probably bearing 36" below grade. The glu-Iam beam has been installed to replace a removed wall. It appears the load applied to the beam is minimal, as the portion of roof supported by the former wall, now beam, has been overframed by an addition, and no longer is subject to live loads (snow). Based on my observations, the glu lam beam is required to support: The dead load of the old roof: The ceiling framing: Attic live load (storage) Beam self weight Total 15 psfx 4' = 60 Ibs/ft 15 psfx 4' = 60 Ibs/ft 20 psfx 4' = 80 Ibs/ft = 21 Ibs/ft = 221lbs/ft At approximately 12' beam span, the post loads are 1,3261bs each. Assuming 2' of the 16" strip footing effective in supporting this load, the soil bearing pressure is approximately 500 psf. This is well below the 1000 psfallowed by the 1997 UBC, Table 18-I-A, even assuming poor quality clay soils.
