Currently, the wall has a standard three foot door, and the owner wishes to remove the wall. This will make the opening roughly 10' -0" wide. The wall in question is centrally located on the upper floor of the bi -level residence. Our investigation found the roof framing is braced to this wall. The wall sits atop the floor, and load bearing wall on the lower level of the house. Our analysis of the roof shows that to increase the size of this opening, a new header will need to be installed. To span an opening distance of no more than 10' -0" the header will need to be made of (2) 2x10's. The 2x10's species should be Douglas Fir - Larch. The grade of species should be construction at a minim To make the header the appropriate width of the 2x4 bearing wall, the header should be sandwiched with a piece of %2" plywood, and the whole assembly should be glued and screwed. At the ends of the header, we suggest that (2) 2x4 jack studs be placed beneath the ends of the header. Our calculations show that the studs can be Douglas Fir- Larch, Construction grade. It is preferable to run the studs through the floor to the top of the bearing wall below. However installing blocking between the floor joists at the stud locations will be an acceptable solution, especially should the studs land on top of a floor joist. Then, blocking should be installed on either side of that floor joist to the two adjacent joists. LONCO investigated the Klinkerfues ' residence Saturday afternoon to determine 'The' "structural requirements for removing a portion of load bearing wall. Currently, the wall has a standard three foot door, and the owner wishes to remove the wall. This will make the opening roughly 10'-0" wide. The wall in question is centrally located on the upper floor of the bi-level residence. Our investigation found the roof framing is braced to this wall. The wall sits atop the floor, and load bearing wall on the lower level of the house. Our analysis of the roof shows that to increase the size of this opening, a new header will need to be installed. To span an opening distance of no more than 10'-0" the header will need to be made of (2) 2x10's. The 2x10's species should be Douglas Fir-Larch. The grade of species should be construction at a minimum. To make the header the appropriate width of the 2x4 bearing wall, the header should be sandwiched with a piece of 1/2" plywood, and the whole assembly should be glued and screwed. At the ends of the header, we suggest that (2) 2x4 jack studs be placed beneath the ends of the header. Our calculations show that the studs can be Douglas Fir-Larch, Construction grade. It is preferable to run the studs through the floor to the top of the bearing wall below. However installing blocking between the floor joists at the stud locations will be an acceptable solution, especially should the studs land on top of a floor joist. Then, blocking should be installed on either side of that floor joist to the two adjacent joists.
