Dear Mr. Odean: We observed the excavation for the subject lot on October 25, 1996. The proposed house will have a partial basemen[ and crawl space. At the time of our visit the excavation had been completed. It was dug to a depth of 31/2 to 51/2 ft. in the upper level and up ro about 71/2 feet deep in the lower level. About four feet of old fill was nored around the sides of [he lower excavation. The soil exposed on the bottom consisted of slightly moist, stiff, sandy clay and was similar to [hat encountered in our borings. The crawl space excava[ion was bottomed in the old till. The upper level footings shouid extend [hrough the old fill and bear on the natural soils. In our opinion the house should be founded on a Type 3 foundation consisting of spread footings with a maximum soil pressure of 4,000 psf and a minimum dead load pressure of 2,000 psf. Footings should be piaced on firm, undisturbed natural soils. A slab on grade loNver floor will have a moderate risk of movement.
