Ward, SE, PE Structural Engineering Manager ion. ward@vivintsolar.com We have reviewed the following information regarding solar panel installation on the roof of the above referenced home: 1. Site Visit by a representative from our office under my supervision identifying specific interior and exterior site information including the condition of the existing roof system and the size, spacing, and condition of existing structural framing members. Information gathered during the site visit includes photographs, sketches, and verification forms. 2. Design drawings of the proposed PV System layout, including details to mount the new solar panels to the existing roof. Based on the above information, we have evaluated the structural capacity of the existing roof system to support the additional loads imposed by the solar panels and have the following comments related to our review and evaluation: A. Description of Residence: The existing residence is typical wood framing construction with a maximum of two layers of composite shingle roofing. All wood material utilized for the roof system is assumed to be Hem -Fir (North) #2 or better with standard construction components and consists of the following: • Roof Section: Dimensional lumber - 2x6 at 24" on center with purlin supports 4.5' from the ridge and 1x6 collar ties at 48" on center. The attic space is unfinished and photos indicate that there was free access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. • Roof Section: Dimensional lumber - 2x6 at 24" on center. The attic space is unfinished and photos indicate that there was free access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. B. Loading Criteria 8.49 PSF = Dead Load (roofing/framing) 2.59 PSF = Dead Load (solar panels/mounting hardware) 11.08 PSF = Total Dead Load rQ c Sa` 20 PSF = Roof Live Load 34 PSF = Ground Snow Load (based on local requirements) Wind speed of 115 mph (based on Exposure Category B - the total area subject to wind uplift is calculated for the Interior, Edge, and Corner Zones of the dwelling.) C. Solar Panel Anchorage 1. The solar panels shall be mounted in accordance with the most recent "EcoFasten Solar Installation Manual", which can be found on the EcoFasten Solar website (www.ecofastensolar.com). If during solar panel installation, the roof framing members appear unstable or deflect non -uniformly, our office should be notified before proceeding with the installation. Page 1 of 2 VIVIII TC Page 2 of 2 2. The solar panels are 11/2' thick and mounted 41/2' off the roof for a total height off the existing roof of 6". At no time will the panels be mounted higher than 6" above the existing plane of the roof. 3. Maximum allowable pullout per lag screw (5/16" x 41/2") is 235 lbs/inch of penetration as identified in the National Design Specifications (NDS) of timber construction specifications for Hem -Fir (North). Based on our evaluation, the pullout value, utilizing a penetration depth of 21/2", is less than the maximum allowable per connection and therefore is adequate. 4. The maximum allowed spacing was calculated for the Wind Speed shown in paragraph B above, using the wind load uplift procedures of ASCE 7-10 and is specified below. The following values have been verified by in- house testing and the mounting hardware manufacturers' data, which are available upon request. Panel support connections shall be staggered to distribute load to adjacent members. D. Summary Based on the above evaluation, with appropriate panel anchors being utilized the roof system designed on will adequately support the additional loading imposed by the solar panels, if installed correctly. This evaluation is in conformance with the 2015 International Residential Code, current industry standards and practice, and the information supplied to us at the time of this report. Mark these using a vertical (N -S) chalk line on the center of the rafters. Spacing may vary depending upon project specific structural requirements; i.e. high snow and wind load areas may require lesser bracket spacing in the E -W axis vs. the maximum spacing. Max spacing is 48" for portrait orientation and 72" for landscape orientation. Consult project layout diagram for project specific bracket spacing on the roof. Install Rock -It Mounts to predetermined mount spacing. The array skirt sections are the width of a typical 60 cell module - use the array skirt as a guide to lay out module placement. Note: The distance between the rows of mounts is calculated by the module dimension N -S plus 1 3/8" (35mm). Lag screw should be installed as close to center of exposed shingle as possible. GreenFasTen FLaSHInG InSTaLL 1 Locate the rafters and snap horizontal and vertical lines to mark the installation position for each GreenFasten flashing. 2 Drill a pilot hole (1 /4" diameter) for the lag bolt. Backfill with sealant. EcoFasten Solar recommends an EPDM mastic. 3 Insert the flashing so the top part is under the next row of shingles and pushed far enough up slope to prevent water infiltration through vertical joint in shingles. The leading edge of flashing must butt against upper row of nails to prevent turning when torqued. 4 Line up pilot hole with GreenFasten flashing hole. Insert the lag bolt through the EPDM bonded washer, the Rock -It slide, the gasketed hole in the flashing and into the rafter. Torque: The range is between 100-140 torque inch -pounds depending on the type of wood and time of year. The visual indicator for proper torque is when the EPDM on the underside of the bonded washer begins to push out the sides as the washer compresses. If using an impact wrench to install the fasteners be careful not to over torque the fastener. You may need to stop and use a ratchet to finish the install. www.ecofastensolar.com info@ecofastensolar.com 877-859-3947 ROCK -IT SYSTem inSTaLL ROCK -IT SYSTEM - Install Eco Fasten Solar Flashing with Rock -It Mounts Follow GreenFasten Install instructions for flashing and bracket install on composition shingle roofs. March 2017 Application Note - SolarEdge String Sizing, North America Introduction There are two primary criteria for string sizing in a SolarEdge system. Maximum (STC) power per string, and minimum and maximum string lengths. This document explains how these values are determined and provides the string sizing rules for the different inverter and optimizer combinations. For additional system design information refer to the inverter and optimizer datasheets. Sizing rules typically depend on the type of inverters and optimizers used: Inverters: single phase or three phase n Optimizers: general or commercial Commercial optimizers can be used only with three phase inverters, while general optimizers can be used with both single and three phase inverters. General optimizers typically have one PV module per optimizer, and commercial optimizers typically have two modules. However these are not fixed requirements and as long as the cumulative power and voltage/current of the modules meets the optimizer specifications as detailed in the datasheet, connecting additional modules per optimizer is permitted (for example connecting 2x120W modules in series to a single P300 general optimizer). Refer to the Connecting Multiple Modules to Power Optimizers application note for details. In the context of this document, string length refers to the number of optimizers and modules in the string. When designing the installation make sure to maintain the maximum physical string length as well: The total cable length of the string (including power optimizers' cables) should not exceed 1000ft./300m from DC+ to DC- of the inverter (2,300ft./700m when using the SE14AKUS and SE33.3KUS inverters). Maximum String Power Maximum string power is simply the "Inverter Nominal DC Input Voltage" multiplied by the "Optimizer Maximum Output Current". These values can be found on the inverter and optimizer datasheets respectively. Table 1 details the values of available products. Table 1: Maximum string power 1 For SE14AKUS only, when used with P600/P700/P730, it is allowed to install up to 650OW per string when 3 strings are connected to the inverter and when the maximum power difference between the strings is up to 1000W. z For SE33.3KUS only, when used with P600/P700/P730, it is allowed to install up to 15000W per string when 3 strings are connected to the inverter and when the maximum power difference between the strings is up to 2000W. There is a buffer added to ensure the operability of the string also in some shading or fault conditions. The maximum number of optimizers per string was established to ensure proper communications between the optimizers and inverter. • When connecting multiple modules to commercial optimizers, in case of an odd number of modules per string it is allowed to connect one optimizer with one module, as long the minimum number of modules per string is maintained as well. To upgrade the inverter software: Use the supplied SD card adapter or the micro -SD card, which can be removed from the adapter, according to the activation card slot on your inverter communication board, labeled y URD 4' . 7 Verity that the AC breaker connected to the inverter is OFF. 2 Open the inverter cover's six Allen screws and carefully pull the cover horizontally before lowering it, as described in its manual. 3 Insert the card into the card slot on the communication board. If the communication board has an SD card slot, use the supplied SD card adapter. If there is a micro -SD card slot, remove the micro -SD card from the adaptor and insert it. 4 Close the inverter cover and turn the AC on. If upgrade is required (as described above), it starts automatically. 5 Wait for the message "Done" to be displayed on the LCD. 6 Verify the correct version as described above. 7 Remove the card from the inverter and keep it for additional kit installations. Power Optimizer Pairing Pairing at this stage will reprogram the power optimizers to perform rapid shutdown. 1 Verify that the ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the inverter is OFF. 2 Turn ON the AC breaker and the Safety Switch. 3 Perform Pairing as described in Step 2: Pairing, of Chapter 5: Commissioning of the SolarEdge Installation Guide. Enabling Rapid Shutdown There is an option in setup mode to enable the functionality of rapid shutdown. 1 Verify that the ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the inverter is ON. 2 Enter Setup mode by pressing and holding the LCD light button. 3 Select Maintenance 4 Optimizer Conf. 4 Set Rapid Shutdown. • Whenever replacing, removing or adding a component in the string, perform Pairing and rapid shutdown setting. Troubleshooting If the inverter does not enter production mode and the LCD displays Night Mode, the connection order of the rapid shutdown cables may be incorrect. Recheck the cables and make sure that the rapid shutdown cables connected to the bottom of the switch are reversed relative to the cables connected at the top of the switch (see Figure 2 and Figure 3). For "On Roof" conductors we use the 90°C column ampacity, 0.5"-3.5" off -the -roof temperature adjustment from 310.15(B)(3)(c), and raceway fill adjustments from 310.15(B)(16). For "Off Roof" conductors we use the 75°C column ampacity, or the 90°C column ampacity with the relevant ambient temperature and raceway fill adjustments, whichever is less. The rating of the conductor after adjustments MUST be greater than, or equal to, the continuous duty uprated output current. Calculation Example - Wire Rating (90°C) x Ambient Temperature Adjustment x Conduit Fill Adjustment >= Continuous Duty Output Current (On Roof, Tag 2): 10 gauge wire rated for 40 A, 40 A x 0.71 x 0.8 (4 Conductors) = 22.72 A>- 18.75 >_18.75 A (Off Roof, Tag 3): 8 gauge wire rated for 50 A, 50 A >= 39.58 A (Off Roof, Tag 4): 6 gauge wire rated for 65 A, 65 A >= 39.58 A OCPD Calculations Breakers sized according to continuous duty output current.
