FIREPLACES March 19, 2009 To Who It May Concern, The purpose of this letter is to recommend to the authority having jurisdiction that a concession be granted for the installation of a Napoleon GD70 Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces installed at: 6845 W. 36th Place, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. 80033. The area of concern is with regard to the framing materials identified in the installation instructions for this model. Specifically that steel studs be used to frame immediately around the fireplace. As the manufacturer of this fireplace, we attest to the fact that this requirement was only recently made in our installation instructions. Prior to this change the instructions stated wooden studs were permitted for framing immediately around the fireplace with 0" clearance. The use of wooden studs was approved when the GD70 was certified for installation under the CSA 2.33 and ANSI Z21.88 Test Standard for Gas, Fireplace Heaters and as such, still is today. The requirement for use of steel studs as described, is part of our own company initiative to improve installation practices of our products and is in no way an indication that the former installation practice is unsafe. The use of wooden studs in the installation of the GD70 fireplace as described does not pose any safety hazard in the operation of this fireplace. This of course is provided that all other clearances from combustible materials including those required from the vent system, have been maintained. As the manufacturer, we condone the installation of the GD70 as described, provided that all other aspects of its installation complies with the installation instructions and local codes. As such, we recommend to the Authority having jurisdiction that this installation is suitable for a concession to the relative requirement. I trust that this letter addresses any concerns regarding the use of combustible wooden framing materials that have been assembled around this fireplace.
