DIIST INDIISTRIAL HYGIENS INVESTIGATION
During the week of August 29, 1994, MCA Environmental, Inc. was
retained by Colorado Compensation Insurance Authority (CCIA) to
conduct an industrial hygiene investigation at High Plateau
Truss. The purpose of the investigation, as requested by Ms.
Christina Barthel with CCIA, was to evaluate the employee
exposure levels to respirable du:st. -
High Plateau Truss is a manufacturer of wood trusses. One of the
job activities conducted by the employees is cutting wood for the
trusses.
OBSffi2VATIONS AND RESIILTS
On September 8, 1994 and September 9, 1994, Mr. Matt Roberts with
MCA Environmental, Iiic. conducted an industrial hygiene
inyestigation at- Eiiakr p'_ate3u .Truss o
Mr. Roberts met with Mr. Brian Coloroso of High Plateau Truss and
discussed the operations. Mr. Roberts observed that there were
two band saws used for cutting wood for the.trusses. There was
not a dust collection system for the band saw, however there was
good qeneral ventilation.
The cutting operations are conducted periodically through out the
day with the majority of the cutting taking place in the morning.
Approximately two hours of cutting is conducted during an eight
hour shift and is conducted at brief periodic intervals.
The type of wood used is primarily pine with some fir also used.
On September 8, 1994, Mr. Roberts collected a respirable dust
sample on Mr. Gary Weese between approximately 7:40 a.m. and
11:40 a.m. Mr. Weese was selected to wear the sample because he _
was the employee conducting the cutting and was anticipated to
have the highest dust exposure. The air sample worn by Mr.. Weese
was sample number A-HPT-001-001.
On September 9, 1994, Mr. Roberts collected a respirable dust _
sample on Mr. Mike Duff between approximately 7:45 a.m. and 11:15=.
a.m. Mr. Duff's job tasks involved building the trusses. Mr.
I
Duff was selected to wear the sample because it was determined
that he would have the next highest dust exposure after the
person conducting the cutting. The air sample worn by Mr. Duff
was sample number A-HPT-001-002.
Both samples were collected using a Gilian personal air sampling
pump calibrated at 1.7 liters of air per minute through a 10
millimeter (mm) respirable dust cyclone onto a three piece PVC
37mm sampling cassette.
Because typically the majority of the cutting is conducted in the
mornings the samples were collected during the morning.
The samples were submitted to Reservoirs Environmental Services
laboratory in Denver, Colorado, for analysis. The result of
sample A-HPT-001-001 was less than 0.22 milligrams of dust per
cubic meter of air (mg/m3). The result of sample A-HPT-001-002
was less than 0.26 mg/m3). Refer to attached Reservoirs
laboratory report.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (oSHA) eight
hour time weighted average for respirable dust is 5 mg/m3.
The sampling by MCA was conducted over approximately a three and
a half, and a four hour period during the highest anticipated
dust exposure. Both of the respirable dust exposures measured by
the two samples were below the detection limit of 0.22 and 0.26
mg/m3 and well below the OSHA eight hour time weighted average of
5 mg/m3.
