TITLE: AN ORDINANCE REGARDING REQUIRED VACCINATIONS FOR
DOGS AND CATS
WHEREAS, the Colorado General Assembly has passed new legislation
regarding rabies inoculation of animals; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to modify the Wheat Ridge Code of
Laws to comply with the new legislation.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WHEAT RIDGE,
COLORADO:
Section 1.
Section 4-10 Rabies Control, is hereby amended to read:
(a) All dogs and cats over the age of four (4) months shall be
inoculated by a licensed veterinarian against rabies. Such inoculation
shall be given once each year OR OTHERWISE IN ACCORDANCE
WITH THE STANDARDS SET FORTH IN THE COMPENDIUM OF
ANIMAL RABIES CONTROL, AS PROMULGATED BY THE NATIONAL
ASSOCIATION OF STATE PUBLIC HEALTH VETERINARIANS. An
owner acquiring a dog or cat shall have such dog or cat inoculated
against rabies EITHER IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARDS SET
FORTH IN THE COMPENDIUM OF ANIMAL RABIES CONTROL, OR IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE: within ten (10)
days after the date of acquisition, or within (10) days after the dog or
cat reaches four (4) months of age, whichever occurs last. Any
person moving into the city from a location outside of the city shall
comply with this section within (10) days after having moved into the
city.
Section 4-31 Doq and cat licenses, is hereby amended to read:
(h) New residents. New residents of the city may be issued
a current Mile-Hi rabies tag and registration certificate for their dog or
cat by a veterinarian licensed to practice in the state, upon proof of
having had the dog or cat vaccinated for rabies by a licensed
veterinarian with a current U.S.D.A. licensed rabies vaccine.

Section 2. Safety Clause. The City Council hereby finds, determines, and
declares that this Ordinance is promulgated under the general police power of the
City of Wheat Ridge, that it is promulgated for the health, safety, and welfare of
the public and that this Ordinance is necessary for the preservation of health and
safety and for the protection of public convenience and welfare. The City Council
further determines that the Ordinance bears a rational relation to the proper
legislative object sought to be attained.
Section 3. Severabilitv: Conflictina Ordinances Repealed. If any section,
subsection or clause of this ordinance shall be deemed to be unconstitutional or
otherwise invalid, the validity of the remaining sections, subsections and clauses
shall not be affected thereby. All other ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict
with the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed.
Section 4. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take effect fifteen days after
final publication, as provided by Section 5.11 of the Charter.

Ridge, Colorado.
