RESOLUTION NO. 623
Series of 1978
TITLE: RESOLUTION INDICATING THE SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF WHEAT RIDGE
FOR THE RETENTION OF LOWRY AIR FORCE BASE IN THE COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, there has been recent comment and discussion regarding pos-
sible U. S. Air Force Base closures which have included Lowry Air Force Base;
and
WHEREAS, Lowry Air Force Base is a historic and essential component
of the Denver area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Wheat Ridge, that the City regards Lowry Air Force Base as a viable and
integral economic force in the community, which adds a $216 Million impact
each year. Its location here adds jobs for 1,925 civilians, and interaction
with the community in terms of housing, education, public services and fellow-
ship. Lowry personnel provide a meaningful and important contribution to
the metropolitan community, adding a dimension and versatility to our popu-
lation. Lowry's training programs provide technical competence to our
country's military strength in terms of training 23,000 military personnel in
over 325 courses. The Wheat Ridge-Denver community and surrounding areas are
culturally enriched and socially strengthened by the presence of Lowry Air
Force Base.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Wheat Ridge is opposed to
any action to close this military establishment unless its continued operation
can be shown to be an unnecessary expenditure of federal funds.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Wheat Ridge wishes to make
express appreciation known for the contributions of Lowry personnel in the
community in our public organizations, churches, and as good citizens in our
many neighborhoods. The City unanimously supports the retention of Lowry
Air Force Base in our community for the many benefits given and shared be-
tween the military and civilian communities.
