RESOLUTION NO. 1639

TITLE:
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING FEDERAL ACTION TO CONSOLIDATE
COMMUNITY ZIP CODES
WHEREAS, the City of Wheat Ridge is a community of
approximately nlne square miles in size, and a population of
approximately 32,000; and
WHEREAS, the City of Wheat Ridge is currently divided
into five different postal zip codes served by a variety of post
offices even though there is a post office within the City of Wheat
Ridge; and
WHEREAS, with the post office's continued insistence of
maintaining multiple zip codes, the community is suffering adverse
impacts associated with the collection of sales tax, the payment of
insurance rates and payments, and in the sense of community
identity; and
WHEREAS, the Wheat Ridge city hall which is approximately
nine blocks from the Wheat Ridge post office, must be served by and
utilize a Lakewood zip code and postal facility; and
WHEREAS, it appears that the sole basis for retaining
multiple zip codes within the City of Wheat Ridge is simply
bureaucratic intransigence and union pressure;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Wheat Ridge, that the United States Congress and the
President of the United states, are hereby respectfully requested
to seek the cooperation of the Postmaster General of the United
States in negotiating in good faith with the City of Wheat Ridge,
a resolution to a long-standing problem of multiple zip codes that
have plagued this community since the time of its incorporation;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Wheat Ridge that this matter is deemed of a high priority to the
community and the city Council, and that the City and its various
representatives will make themselves available at any and all
opportunities to discuss this matter and its successful resolution
with representatives of the Federal government or Postal Service.
