E3 was retained by Carlson Homes to determine if the materials scheduled for renovation within the property contain asbestos. SURVEY METHODOLOGY An industrial hygienist from E3 conducted the sampling. Materials were grouped into homogeneous sampling areas based on the material type. Among the interior building materials, six (6) distinct homogeneous area within the property was identified and sampled. No other building materials were sampled Homogeneous Material Classifications ■ A preliminary walk through of the buildings was conducted to determine areas of materials which were visually similar in color, texture, general appearance, and which appeared to have been installed at the same time. Such materials have been termed "homogeneous materials" by the EPA. During this walk through, the approximate locations of these homogeneous materials were noted. ■ Following the EPA inspection protocol, each identified suspect homogeneous material was placed in one of the following EPA classifications: o Surfacing Materials - Sprayed or troweled on surfaces (walls, ceilings, structural members) for acoustical, decorative, or fireproofing purposes. This includes plaster and fireproofing insulation. o Miscellaneous Materials - Other non -friable products and materials such as floor tile and ceiling tile. city of wheat Ridge o Thermal System Insulation - Insulation used to inhibit heat transfer or prevent condensation on pipes, boilers, tanks, ducts, and various other components of hot and cold -water systems and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (VAC.) systems. This includes pipe lagging, pipe wrap, block, batt, blanket insulation, cements, muds, gaskets and ropes. (These materials were not sampled as part of the survey.) Friability Classifications Friable and non -friable ACM's are defined as follows: ■ Friable asbestos -containing material: any material containing more than 1% asbestos, determined using PLM analysis, that when dry, can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure. ■ Category I nonfriable asbestos -containing material: asbestos -containing resilient floor covering, mastic or asphalt roofing product containing more than 1% asbestos as determined using PLM. ■ Category II nonfriable asbestos -containing material: any material, excluding Category I non -friable ACM, containing more than I% asbestos as determined using PLM that, when dry, cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure. ■ Regulated asbestos -containing material (RACM): (1) friable ACM, (2) Category I nonfriable ACM That has become friable, (3) Category I nonfriable ACM that will be or has been subjected to sanding, grinding, cutting, or abrading, or (4) Category II nonfriable ACM that has a high probability of becoming or has become crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by the forces expected to act on the materials in the course of demolition or renovation operations. Sampling and Laboratory Anal Bulk samples were collected by using various sampling tools (cutting tools, knives and chisels) to cut away or scrape portions of suspect building materials into zip -sealed plastic bags or sampling tubes. The individual samples were labeled by material type and location. Samples were analyzed by Reservoirs Environmental Laboratory located in Denver, CO. The laboratory maintains accreditations through the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP). The analysis performed was EPA Method 600/R-93/116. INSPECTION RESULTS E3 collected at least the minimum number of samples from each homogeneous area necessary to meet all regulatory requirements for the quantity of material to be disturbed. Roof Application Along the eave line, a 36" wide strip of Type 30 roofing felt is laid over the sheathing. The beginning or starter course at the eave line should be doubled. After each course of shakes is applied, an 18" wide strip of Type 30 roofing felt is laid over the top portion of the shakes extending onto the sheathing, with the bottom edge of the felt positioned at a distance above the butt equal to twice the weather exposure. Fasteners Stainless steel fasteners (ASTM type 304 or 316) are recommended. Use two for each shake placing them approximately one inch from each edge, and high enough to be covered an inch or two by the succeeding course. Fasteners should be long enough to penetrate at least 3/4" or through the sheathing. The butts of the shakes should project from 1-1/2" to 2"from the first roof board so that the rainwater will spill into the gutter or to the ground without working down the side of the building. Individual shakes should be spaced about 3/8" to 5/8" apart to allow for possible expansion.
