Product Description The SRS mounting structure is designed to be used on residential roof tops. The structure is attached to the roof top and the photovoltaic modules are then attached to the structure.. The version tested is designed to be used with various types of roofing materials. These include Spanish concrete tile, flat concrete tile, clay concrete tile, and asphalt shingles. The attached drawings from the installation manual illustrate the installation process. The SRS mounting structure is constricted from roll-formed and pressed sheet metal parts and stainless steel fasteners. The sheet metal parts are galvanized with a Super Dyma® coating, similar to Galvalume, containing Zinc, Aluminum and Magnesium for corrosion protection. Purpose: The purpose of the Static Load testis to observe that the mounting structure can withstand a static load of at least 50 PSF (pounds per square foot) in both the "downward" and "upward" directions as shown in the attached test diagrams. The "downward direction is used to indicate snow loads and impinging wind loads in a direction normal to the front surface of the solar module. The "upward" direction is used 1 to indicate uplift caused by high wind speeds when airflow under the module produces pressures up to 50 PSF. Materials: A test structure consisting of 4x8 and 2x8 timbers as shown in the diagram was constructed to support the SRS mounting structure. The timbers were arranged for 48 inch on center spacing so that four ND 187U1 modules arranged in two rows and two columns could be mounted in a portrait fashion. 12 inch x 16 inch rectangles of 15/32 oriented strand board (OSB) were placed on the structural members to simulate the wood deck of a standard residential roof top. The SRS mounting structure was then installed as shown in the attached installation manual. Six wood screws were used to attach the aluminum plate. The 3.15" wood screws were used to attach the plate to the structural member while the 1.4" wood screws were used to secure the plate to the wood deck. Once the aluminum plate was attached, the tile standoff and slider were place 4 inches to the right of the centerline of the structural member using the 5.3" stainless steel screws. The rest of the SRS components and modules were then installed in accordance with the installation manual. The talon clips module mountings were placed 8 inches from the comer of each module. Procedure: 50 pound bags of construction sand were individually weighed to the nearest 1/10 pound and marked. A dial indicator with 2 inch range was placed on a block of wood under the test structure to measure the total deflection during the loading stage. The test structure was supported by cinder blocks as shown in the diagram. With the test array in the normal direction (modules facing the sky) sand bags were individually placed on top of the modules while the weight of each bag was recorded. The sand bags were evenly distributed so that the array was uniformly loaded to the best of our abilities. Once the total load was equivalent to 50 PSF no more sand bags were added and the structure was allowed to sit undisturbed for 30 minutes. During this time the deflection was recorded on the dial gage approximately every 2 minutes. After 30 minutes, the array was unloaded and flipped 180 degrees so that the front surface of the modules was facing the ground. The test was then repeated in the same fashion placing sandbags on both the modules and the SRS rails. Pull Out Testing Pull out testing of individual mounting components was performed on the main attachment methods for the Sharp SRS system. The tile attachment and flashed attachments were tested to obtain pullout values for each. The pullout force was applied and measured. Failure was indicated when the peak load was observed. March 12, 2007- Preliminary testing was performed. Initialrig used a bolt through the mount for pull up. Flashed Attachment #i- Attachment of flashed slider into a Douglas fir rafter through 15/32" OSB. Peak load occurred at 17541bf. However first peak was observed at -1450pf. Deformation of the slider occurred due to point load from the pullout harness. Screws were not pulling from the rafter at that time. Tile Attachment #1- Attachment of tile attachment into aluminum plate and 15132" OSB. First peak at -6801bf was observed. This related to some deformation of the aluminum. Additional Peak at 7641bf was seen. Then complete failure when screws pulled out of OSB. Screws attached to rafter were not withdrawn. March 19, 2007 - Improved rig spreads load onto mounting foot better. Tile Attach. #2- Attachment of file attachment into aluminum plate and 15/32" OSB. Peak load observed at 851 Ibf. Failure due to screws pulling out of OSB, deformation of the mounting plate was observed. Flash/Rafter- Attachment of flashed slider into a Douglas fir rafter through 15/32" OSB. Peak load observed was 1693 Ibf. Results: Per the above cited various test conditions, the tile roof attachment exhibited the least amount of pull out capability. In the downward direction 62 sandbags were used totaling 3,215 pounds. The total area of the array was 61W, yielding a load of 50.4 PSF. After 30 minutes the deflection was stabilized at 0.890 inches. The entire array remained intact and no signs of failure were observed. In the upward direction 62 sandbags were used totaling 3,213 pounds. The total area of the array was 63.8ftz, yielding a load of 50.4 PSF. After 30 minutes the deflection was stabilized at 0.950 inches. The entire array remained intact and no signs of failure were observed. Conclusion: The SRS mounting structure with the tile attachment method exhibited the least amount of pullout capability but was able to withstand a static load of 50 PSF in both the "downward" and "upward" directions for 30 minutes with no visible signs of failure or prolonged deformation. It is therefore concluded that all other tested attachment methods are capable of withstanding the industry wide acceptable limit of 50 PSF. This clip, referred to as the "talon clip", has sharp barbs that pierce through the anodized coating on the module frame to make contact with the aluminum. The talon clip is bolted to the steel rails, part# AA801 - AA805, which are each then bonded in series to each other and to the grounding electrode as shown in the installation guide above. This method takes the place of the traditional grounding lug typically placed on each module and the grounding conductor run under each module by utilizing the talon clips and rails as grounding conductors. Below is a picture illustrating the barbs on the talon clip that bite into the module frame. In the case that modules must be removed after the installation is complete, it is important to note that individual modules cannot be removed without first being disconnected from the power circuit. Modules on the upper most row must be removed before the lower modules can be removed. This is because of the design of the SRS utilizing hidden fasteners. To ensure that the grounding conductor is the last to break, after turning off the DC disconnect, the module's power conductors should be disconnected before the talon clip is removed. This is a simple and safe way to disconnect the modules if the wire management methods detailed in the installation guide on page 37 are utilized. In the event of SHARP Electronics Corporation Solar Energy Solutions Group 9501 Bolsa Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647 ~ !Ap SHARP Technical Bulletin a ground fault, the module should also be de-energized before the talon clip is removed. It is also recommended to de-energize the entire array as detailed on page 6 of the installation guide, using an opaque cover to reduce the risk of shock. Currently only the Sharp Models ND-187U1, ND-187U2, ND-1871-11F, ND-181 U1 and ND-181 U2 are listed for integrated grounding. A copy of the UL certification document is included on the last page of this document. It can also be downloaded from the UL website at www.ul.com following the certifications directory link. In the future more modules will be Listed for integrated grounding. These will include most of the ND series models. Sharp is currently involved in the listing process with UL for these modules and will send out announcements as soon as the process is complete. Arrays built with modules other than those shown on the certification document covered under "Photovoltaic Modules with Framing system" should be grounded by traditional means. To conform to the UL listing these modules must be used with the SRS listed parts in order to utilize integrated grounding. SRS listed parts will be shipped with rails that have UL labels as shown in the picture below. SRS parts shipped prior to the production of the listed parts are not considered listed. These parts would have been shipped with rails that do not have the UL label. Arrays built with SRS parts shipped with rails that do not bear the UL label can not utilize integrated grounding. Traditional grounding methods should be used for arrays built with these parts. SHARP Electronics Corporation Solar Energy Solutions Group 9501 Bolsa Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647 SHARK Technical Bulletin Labeling previous existing inventory Sharp maintains strict control over the manufacturing of the UL listed parts to ensure the material and production quality is maintained to both Sharp internal and UL standards. Parts that do not meet these criteria can not bear the UL label and can not be used. While all SRS parts produced in the past and just prior to the listed parts have been built to these same standards, SRS parts that were sold without the UL labeled rails are not considered listed parts by UL, and can not be labeled as such. This means that current, unlisted inventory held by our customers can not be labeled for integrated grounding, and must be installed using traditional grounding means. UL standard 1703 review UL Standard for Safety for Flat-Plate Photovoltaic Modules and Panels, UL 1703 was standard originally developed for modules. Since the SRS is dependant on the module frame, the SRS becomes an integral part of the array assembly, and the module becomes part of the SRS assembly. Because of this unique design, the module and SRS can be considered one "system". We have worked closely with UL to include this in the scope of UL 1703 and this "system" is what is listed for integrated grounding. This is one reason why it is important to realize that each module and dependant SRS part must be listed for this "system" as detailed in the previous sections of this bulletin. UL testing review In order to list this new type of system under UL 1703 and utilize integrated grounding methods, many rigorous testing and evaluation procedures were performed to ensure the product would meet UL standards to be safe and reliable.
