1. This permit was issued based on the information provided in thepermit application and accompanying plans and specifications and is
subject to the compliance with those documents, and all applicable statutes, ordinances, regulations, po plans
and procedures.
2. This, permit shall expire 365 days after the date of issuance regardless of activity. Requests for extension must be made in writing and
received prior to the date of expiration. An extension of no more than 180. days made be granted at the discretion of the Chief Building
Official and may be subject to a fee equal to one-half of the originalermit fee.
3. If this permit expires, a new permit may be required to be obtained. Issuance of a new permit shall be subject to the standard
requirements, fees and procedures for approval of any new permit. Re -issuance or extension of expired permits is at the sole discretion of
the Chief Building Official and is not guaranteed.

5 The permit holder shall notify the Building and Inspection Services Division in accordance with established policy of all required
inspections and shall not proceed or conceal work without written approval of such work from the Building and Inspection Services

I have discussed your structure with Travis Crane, Planner, Mr. Crane has determined that the
entire structure must be located outside the 30-foot front yard setback or you must apply for a
variance.
I have reviewed the information you submitted related to structural and flame retardants of the
structure and membrane material. Below is a list of information needing to be supplied by the
manufacturer for review,

/:, Provide documentation from the manufacturer stating the structure has been tested and
approved per International Conference of Building Officials and Uniform Building Code
Standards. (documentation submitted states Southern Building Code and Florida
Building Code)
/:, The flammability indicated in the information you submitted states the membrane
material "ignited" but was extinguished. UBC requires the material be noncombustible
or flame retardant conforming to UBC Standard 31-1.
The above information along with a structural analysis prepared and stamped by a Colorado
Licensed Engineer, needs to be submitted. The analysis should address structural integrity of the
frame and membrane for 90 MPH wind load and snow load of 30# live load 115# dead.

In regards to the canopy frame, membrane structure on my driveway at 3815 Independence CT, I have
received specifications from the manufacturer Powell & Powell Supply Co. Lillington, NC. 27546. I
am not sure if these studies will be sufficient to meet the codes that are required by The City of Wheat
Ridge.
Please find attached documents that respond to:
A. Wind load
B. Weight load
C. Fire resistance
I am very willing to meet all required codes. I still seek your requirement from the planning
department as to the structure being left as is, encroaching 7 feet into the thirty foot set-back from the
front property line or taking the fIrst 7-9 feet off. I am already planning to purchase a new, heavier,
certified fire retardant tarp (membrane) for the canopy frame carport.
As you may remember, I upgraded the frame structure to include heavier side poles. Instead of using
the recommended tent-stake-type anchors I cemented and/or bolted to cement those side support poles
(not required by assembly instructions). Bolts (not required by assembly instructions) were added to
strengthen all connections of the poles and their fittings. Lastly, between each 5-Y:. foot pole roof-truss
section, I connected plastic encased 3/8-inch cable wire every 2 feet to reinforce the tarp to improve
the weight load (also not required by the assembly instructions). These reinforcement-stabilizing
improvements have greatly enhanced the strength of the canopy frame structure beyond the original
design.
I am willing, as I mentioned in my phone message last week to you, to hire a structural engineer for
approximately $450.00 to certify the code requirements. However, I would hope that the specification
documents sent to me by Powell & Powell Supply Co., for their canopy frame structure, are sufficient.
Please advise me as to what you require me to do at this time. I am certainly going to pay for and
complete the application for a building permit and in addition will pay all required fmes as to my lack
of following the city's, by law, procedures.
I apologize for my ignorance in not knowing the proper procedures and codes that you and the city
require. Thank you for your assistance, patience, and understanding.

It has recently come to the attention of The City Of Wheat Ridge Building Department that there exists
a membrane structure on the driveway at 3815 Independence Court, Schedule Number 023466.
Membrane structures are allowed only when they meet or exceed the requirements of the Building and
Planning Departments.
The following are the minimum requirements:
1. All membrane structures must meet setback distances. City of Wheat Ridge Code of Laws.
2. Membrane structures must meet a minimum ninety mile per hour wind load. U.B.C.(l997)
Chapter 16.
3. Membrane structures must meet a thirty pound snow load.
4. Membrane structures must be made of fire retardant materials as per Appendix Section 3112.2
ofthe Uniform Building Code(l997).
5. A building permit is required for membrane structures. U.B.C,(l997), Section 106.
