SCOPE OF THE SYSTEM: The EcoFasten Rock -it System is a solar panel support system for installing solar photovoltaic arrays on sloped roofs of buildings. Typically such buildings are residential with shingle or tile roofs. The number and spacing of attachments to the roof structure can vary depending on various site specific criteria including, but not limited to, roof slope, spacing of supporting structural members and environmental loading. SCOPE OF OUR REVIEW: PZSE, Inc.—Structural Engineers provided a review of the following • Rock -it System design methodology • Rock -it System Installation Manual • Rock -it System Loading Tables and has determined that all information, data and analysis contained within the Installation Manual are based on, and are in compliance with, the structural requirements of the following Reference Documents: • Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and other Structures, ASCE/SEI 7-05/ 7-10 • International Building Code, 2015/ 2012 /2009 Edition, by International Code Council, Inc. • Aluminum Design Manual, 2010 & 2015 Editions, by The Aluminum Association This letter certifies that the EcoFasten Rock -it System Installation Manual and Loading Tables are in compliance with the above Reference Documents. DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY: The Rock -it System Installation Manual is intended to be used under the responsible charge of a registered design professional where required by the authority having jurisdiction. In all cases, the user of the Installation Manual has sole responsibility for the accuracy of the design and integrity of the system. The Installation Manual does not check the capacity of the building structure to support the loads imposed on the building by the array, such as bending strength of roof rafters spanning between supports. This requires additional knowledge of the building and is outside the scope of the Installation Manual and our review. If you have any questions on the above, do not hesitate to call. Based upon our review, it is our conclusion that the installation of the solar array on this existing roof will require retrofit to the roof structure. The existing rafters under the solar arrays that have 2 rows of panels will need to be sistered with new 2x12 rafters attached with 16d sinkers at 8" O.C. staggered. The existing rafters under the solar array with 1 row of panels will need to be sistered with new 2x6 rafters attached with 16d sinkers at 8" O.C. staggered. It is our understanding that the structural components of the existing roof framing are in good condition and free of damage. The design of the solar panel racking (mounts, rails, etc.) is by the manufacturer or contractor. Please note a representative of Vector Structural Engineering has not visited the site; however, a site survey has been performed by Suntalk Solar Energy Solutions and photos of the existing structure have been submitted for review. In the area of the solar array, other live loads will not be present or will be greatly reduced. See attached calculations for retrofit beams adequacy. 651 W. Galena Park Blvd., Ste. 101 / Draper, UT 84020 / T (801) 990-1775 / F (801) 990-1776 / www.vectorse.com VSE Project Number: U2332-0085-171 Damon Brune Residence T9/13/2017 E n G I n E E R s The solar array will be flush -mounted (no more than 6" above the roof surface) and parallel to the roof surface. Thus, we conclude that any additional wind loading on the structure related to the addition of the proposed solar array is negligible. The attached calculations verify the capacity of the connections of the solar array to the existing roof against wind (uplift), the governing load case. The connections to the existing roof shall be spaced at 48" maximum. Because lateral loads are increasing by less than 10%, the installation of the solar panels meets the requirements in Section 3403.4 of the 2012 IBC. Limitations Installation of the solar panels must be performed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. All work performed must be in accordance with accepted industry -wide methods and applicable safety standards. The contractor shall notify Vector Structural Engineering, LLC should any damage, deterioration or discrepancies between the as -built condition of the structure and the condition described in this letter be found. Particular attention must be paid to the maximum allowable spacing of connections and the location of solar panels relative to roof edges. Connections to existing roof framing must be staggered so as not to overload any existing structural member, except at array ends. The use of solar panel support span tables provided by others is allowed only where the building type, site conditions, site-specific design parameters, and solar panel configuration match the description of the span tables. Electrical engineering is the responsibility of others. Waterproofing around the roof penetrations is the responsibility of others. Amy LAYOUT Find the required structural attachment points. Mark these using a vertical (N -S) chalk line on the center of the rafters. Spacing may vary depending upon project specific structural requirements; i.e. high snow and wind load areas may require lesser bracket spacing in the E -W axis vs. the maximum spacing. Max spacing is 48"for portrait orientation and 72"for landscape orientation. Consult project layout diagram for project specific bracket spacing on the roof. Install Rock -It Mounts to predetermined mount spacing. The array skirt sections are the width of a typical 60 cell module - use the array skirt as a guide to lay out module placement. Note: The distance between the rows of mounts is calculated by the module dimension N -S plus 1 3/8" (35mm). Lag screw should be installed as close to center of exposed shingle as possible. The minimum distance between the lag screw and the edge of the shingle is 1/2". GreenFasTen FLaSHinG insTaLL position for each GreenFasten flashing. vertical lines to mark the installation 2 Drill a pilot hole (1 /4"diameter) for the lag bolt. Backfill with sealant. EcoFasten Solar recommends an EPDM mastic. 3 Insert the flashing so the top part is under the next row of shingles and pushed far enough up slope to prevent water infiltration through vertical joint in shingles. The leading edge of flashing must butt against upper row of nails to prevent turning when torqued. 4 Line up pilot hole with GreenFasten flashing hole. Insert the lag bolt through the EPDM bonded washer, the Rock -It slide, the gasketed hole in the flashing and into the rafter. Torque: The range is between 100-140 torque inch -pounds depending on the type of wood and time of year. The visual indicator for proper torque is when the EPDM on the underside of the bonded washer begins to push out the sides as the washer compresses. If using an impact wrench to install the fasteners be careful not to over torque the fastener. You may need to stop and use a ratchet to finish the install. *The Engineer of Record shall check capacity of rafter to support lag screw loading. www.ecofastensolar.com info@ecofastensolar.com 877-859-3947 GrounDinG inFormaTion The rail -free Rock -It System may be used to mount and ground PV modules that comply with UL 1703, only when that specific module has been evaluated for mounting and grounding, in compliance with the included installation instructions. Design Parameters Code: International Building Code, 2012 Edition Risk Category: II Design wind speed: 105 mph (3 -sec gust) per ASCE 7-10 Wind exposure category: C Ground snow load: 30 psf Existint Roof Structure Roof structure: 2x6 rafters @ 24" O.C. In the area of the solar array, other live loads will not be present or will be greatly reduced. See attached calculations for retrofit beams adequacy. Zol1ol103 651 W. Galena Park Blvd., Ste. 101 / Draper, UT 84020 / T (801) 990-1775 / F (801) 990-1776 / www.vectorse. 1"47 VSE Project Number: U2332-0085-171 Damon Brune Residence T9/13/2017 E n G I n E E R S The solar array will be flush -mounted (no more than 6" above the roof surface) and parallel to the roof surface. Vector Structural Engineering assumes no responsibility for improper installation of the solar array. VECTOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING, LLC Clifton Palmer, P.E. Mark these using a vertical (N -S) chalk line on the center of the rafters. Spacing may vary depending upon project specific structural requirements; i.e. high snow and wind load areas may require lesser bracket spacing in the E -W axis vs. the maximum spacing. Max spacing is 48" for portrait orientation and 72" for landscape orientation. Consult project layout diagram for project specific bracket spacing on the roof. Install Rock -It Mounts to predetermined mount spacing. • The array skirt sections are the width of a typical ov cell module - use the array skirt as a guide to lay out module placement. Note: The distance between the rows of mounts is calculated by the module dimension N -S plus 1 3/8" (35mm). Lag screw should be installed as close to center of exposed shingle as possible. The minimum distance between the lag screw and the edge of the shingle is 1/2". GreenFasTen FLasHInG InsTaLL 1 Locate the rafters and snap horizontal and vertical lines to mark the installation position for each GreenFasten flashing. 2 Drill a pilot hole (1 /4" diameter) for the lag bolt. GrounDinG inFormaTion The rail -free Rock -It System may be used to mount and ground PV modules that comply with UL 1703, only when that specific module has been evaluated for mounting and grounding, in compliance with the included installation instructions. Note: Grounding lug must be visible to inspectors from the entire perimeter of the PV array. Multiple Use Grounding Pins Grounding pins within the Mid -Clamp are multiple use bonding/grounding devices. Modules will need to be adjusted if the Mid -Clamps are loosened to ensure there is "new" metal to pierce into upon retightening.
