The 2x10 joists, spaced 16 -inches on center, have been drilled with 1- 1/4" holes for radiant heat tubing. The holes were drilled through the upper portion of the joist, but do not create a notch in the joists (that is, there is—1"-1-1/4" of joist remaining above the hole). Based on the distance that the holes were drilled from the joist bearing, the transformed section properties of the drilled joists are such that they are capable of supporting the design stresses in the joist at the location of the hole. Therefore, the joists are structurally sound to support a residential floor live load of 40 psf, and no sistering or other reinforcing of the joists will be required. Review was performed under the 2018 IRC, utilizing a 30 psf ground snow load, 40 psf floor live load, and an ultimate wind speed of 135 mph, exposure C.
