Nailed Base or Adhered Base? IS ®1. Align Base Sheets... Starting at the lowest point of the roof where there are gutter or fascia edges, extend the base sheet over and down the fascia fully behind the metal edge or gutter height, fastened along roof edge and along fascia 9" o.c. Minimum overhang is 1. Begin with 1/2 width P19 11/16") sheets in 2 -ply systems. Use 1/3 width (13 1/8") starter sheets in 3 -ply systems and install ,a ply (interply sheet) starting with 1/2 width (19 11/16") sheets to maintain side lap offsets. 2. Install MA Base Sheet (Where Required)... using nails with 1" cap heads. Fasten every 9" in the lap and stagger 2 rows in the field every 18" (see Fastening detail). Cover the entire roof area. E13. Install Self -Adhered Base Sheet... by aligning sheets properly before removing the release liners. Roll out sheet and let it sit or "relax" for at least 30 minutes to minimize the potential for wrinkles that can form during installation. Remove one side of the release liner at a time. 4. Overlap Following Rows of Base Sheet... horizontally (side lap) by using the line found on tt�e base sheet. Remove release films from top and bottom half of sheet in turn, carefully rolling back into position to maintain overlap. Where no line isppresent, overlap by 3'. Overlap vertically (end laps) by at least 6". Make sure all end laps are at least 18" apart. 5. Roll Base Sheet Into Place (Base Only)... using a weighted lawn or linoleum roller. Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)... • Not Letting The Liberty TM Sheets Relax... can lead to wrinkles. In colder weather, the rolls require more time to flatten. �� • Not Rolling The Base Sheets... Is a leading cause of opening laps. Always pay close attention to laps when rolling the base sheets. STEP 3 - Installing Liberty'" Self -Adhered Cap Sheet... Where Do I Begin? ®1. Install Edge Flashin over the base sheet in a 1/8" bed of cement and stagger nail with two rows of roofing nails, 3" o.c. Prime the face on the roof and allow to dry before installing cap sheet. 2. Align Cap Sheet... 1/4" from the edge at the lowest point of the roof. Roll out and position full width (39 3/8') sheets with the selvage edge on the high side of the roof. Allow sheet to relax for at least 30 minutes prior to installing. 3. Overlap Following Rows... horizontally (side lap) by aligning with the bottom of the selvage edge. Roofing felt system interlay between the shake courses is required whether the sheathing is spaced or solid. The felt interlay acts as a baffle that prevents wind -driven snow or other foreign material from entering the attic cavity during extreme weather conditions. The felt interlays also increase the roof's insulation value. The felt interlay system forces water to the surface. if spaced sheathing is used in shake application, the sheathing is usually t x 6 boards spaced on centers equal to the weather exposure, {Table 4, Page 20) at which the shakes are to be laid - but nevermore than 7 �Q"for 18' shakes and t0"for 24„ shakes on roofJhstaflations. Special care should be taken when installing the felt interlays over spaced sheathing to ensure that an effective baffle is formed Figure 1). The felt should be applied over the top portion of the shakes and extend on to the spaced sheathing so that the bottom edge of the felt is positioned at a distance above the butt equal to twice the weather exposure. ei®label Shake Application Shakes, like shingles, are normally applied in straight single courses. Thus, if the shingles are to be laid at 5 1/2" to the weather, the sheathing boards would also be spaced at 5 1/2" on center. In this method of application each shingle is nailed to the center of the 1 x 4 board.1filith 7 1/2" weather exposures, the center of the sheathing board shall equal the distance of the weather exposure. Alternatively, although not commonly used, a permeable underlayment (i.e. breathable), such as roofing felt, may be applied over either solid or spaced sheathing. Please note that the only solid sheathing product tested for use with Certi-label shakes and shingles is plywood. Check with your local building official for plywood thickness/dimensions. Certi-label Shingle Application Regardless of style, the following basic application details (Figure 5) must be observed. 1. Shingles must be doubled or tripled at all eaves. .
