There is an existing wood column supporting the inside comer of the main floor framing at the existing L shaped stairway. This column appears to be bearing on the basement floor slab. The proposed stairway is located in approximately the same location as the existing stairway, and is U shaped. The inside comers of the main floor framing at the U shaped stairway will need to be support by columns in the basement similar to the existing condition. We feel these columns should each be 3" diameter adjustable steel columns (II gauge minimum). Based on our recent observation of exposed claystone bedrock in a nearby opening in the basement floor slab, it is our opinion that these lightly loaded columns may bear directly on the floor slab. However, the homeowners must be willing to accept risk of future movement due to the underlying expansive soils, in an effort to match the existing conditions and save construction costs. As a precautionary measure the floor slab could be saw cut to form a 12" square pad below each column, however the risk of expansive soils movement would still be possible. If the homeowners are unwilling to accept this risk, the new footing pads should each be substituted with a helical pier foundation system. Scott, Cox & Associates, Inc. would be happy to provide further consulting and detailing on this matter if the helical pier option is desired. The main floor framing on the U shaped side ofthenew stair opening should be supported with a double I 'I4"x7V." Microllam flush beam (Fb=2600 psi, 1.9E) spanning north-south, bearing over the existing steel beam supporting the main floor framing and over the north exterior basement wall. Double 2x8 HF#2 flush beams should be used to support the main floor framing on the interior of the U shape, bearing over the new steel columns and hanging into the double Microllam with standard double joist hangers. We recommend over sizing the opening you saw cut in the basement floor slab to 36" square, to accommodate possible changes in pad size based on observed soil conditions. The existing strip footing should be removed in the location of the proposed footing pad, and should not be removed in other locations. The existing strip footing size adjacent to the fire place should be verified with the engineer for the new column bearing conditions, at the time of construction when the footing is exposed.
