The position of each edge of the section is approximate. These are the sections referred to later in the report. The house is framed using 2x6 lumber. At one time this house had a fire and there was smoke and some fire damage in the attic. Parts of the attic are painted white which is a standard procedure after a fire. Using the information we collected we were able to model the support system in this house. The top portion of the model is the deflection and the bottom portion is the bending moment normalized. This means any value less than 100% is acceptable. The extra stiffening that is present is not required, but does provide added stiffening. The section 2 framing is very similar without some of the extra bracing. The last section #3 is larger and there are longer spans. There are some stiffeners in place but there are approximately 6-8 rafters that are too long. Project: 17 Morningside Dr These long unsupported rafters need to be sistered as follows: 1. Each long rafter is to be sistered with an 8 -ft section of 2x6. 2. Remove the roof deck to gain access to the rafters on the inside of the attic. 3. The sister is to be centered between the ridge and the top plate of the wall. 4. The top of the 2x6 shall be flush with the roof deck. 5. The wood is to be glued using Locktite® PL -400, PL -375, PL -Premium or OSI SF450+ applied according to the glue manufacturer's instructions. 6. The 2x6 wood is to be attached using minimum 12d nails. 7. The nails can be pneumatically driven. 8. Install nails 6" on -center into the existing rafters. After sistering the model looks like this. The arrows point to the location of the sister. There are several locations with cracked framing. One in the garage is a location where the diagonal braces have slipped. The photo is below. Remove the short vertical stick. Install a section of 2x6 between the diagonals and secure the newly installed 2x6 and the diagonals to prevent any more movement. There are several places where rafters have split at the ridge as shown. This can be sistered as described above. When the roof is torn off, the roof deck should be checked to verify that the sheathing is nailed using 1 fastener every 6" along the seams and 12" on -center in the field of the sheathing. Please note, anytime you reroof there is a rapid change of loading as the old roof is removed and the new roof installed. This change in loading, movement of materials and men, and the pounding that occurs, can cause small drywall cracks. These are not structural. If any cracking is observed, please call our office so we can make sure that there is nothing else that may have occurred. There was no significant storage in the attic space. It is assumed that no additional storage will be done in the attic. Loading the bottom chord of trusses can change their behavior. If heavy items are to be stored in the attic consult with CSS, Inc. to make sure the loading is acceptable. This opinion is based on the conditions observed. There are sometimes areas of framing that are not observable. Change of use or loading by conditions outside of those observed can change the results of the analysis. Alterations to the framing will require a new analysis.
