Ward, SE, PE Structural Engineering Manager jon. ward0vivintsolar.com We have reviewed the following information regarding solar panel installation on the roof of the above referenced home: 1. Site Visit by a representative from our office under my supervision identifying specific interior and exterior site information including the condition of the existing roof system and the size, spacing, and condition of existing structural framing members. Information gathered during the site visit includes photographs, sketches, and verification forms. 2. Design drawings of the proposed PV System layout, including details to mount the new solar panels to the existing roof. Based on the above information, we have evaluated the structural capacity of the existing roof system to support the additional loads imposed by the solar panels and have the following comments related to our review and evaluation: A. Description of Residence: The existing residence is typical wood framing construction with a maximum of two layers of composite shingle roofing. All wood material utilized for the roof system is assumed to be Hem -Fir (North) #2 or better with standard construction components and consists of the following: Roof Section: Dimensional lumber - 2x6 at 24" on center and 1x8 collar ties at 48" on center. Survey photos indicate that there was free access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. The maximum interior horizontal span used for design verification is 10.72'. Based on the span of the existing rafters for this roof section, a structural upgrade is required to strengthen the roof system. Select from options presented in paragraph C below, and locate the upgrade between 0.5' and 10.5' from the ridge. Roof Section: Dimensional lumber - assumed 2x6 at 24" on center. Survey photos indicate that there was not free access to visually inspect the size and condition of the roof members. The maximum interior horizontal span used for design verification is 4.33'. B. Loading Criteria Oky or 8.49 PSF = Dead Load (roofing/framing) Wh !rd9 e 2.59 PSF = Dead Load (solar panels/mounting hardware) eatf 11.08 PSF = Total Dead Load e y`o 20 PSF = Roof Live Load'dlRg`O 43 PSF = Ground Snow Load (based on local requirements) Wind speed of 115 mph (based on Exposure Category B - the total area subject to wind uplift is calculated for the Interior, Edge, and Corner Zones of the dwelling.) Page 1 of3 . Page 2 of 3 C. Approved Structural Upgrade Options The method of strengthening the roof shall be determined by a Contractor and the Home Owner under my direction and based on actual field conditions such as access to the attic and location of load bearing walls, and shall be chosen from the following options: Knee wall or purlin constructed of either 2x4's or 2x6's with top and bottom plates attached to the rafters and attic joists respectively, shall be built in the attic. The top plate of the support shall be as described above. The bottom plate shall be within 12" of a parallel load bearing wall below the attic. The maximum permitted angle of the knee wall or purlin struts shall be 45 degrees from vertical. Full length sistered rafters shall be installed from the ridge to the exterior wall same size as the existing rafters. The sistered rafters shall have 2 rows of 10 penny nails or #8 x 2 112' wood screws at 18" on center. The rows shall be staggered by 9". One splice in the new rafter may be permitted if plywood mending plates (min 24" in length) are installed on both sides of the rafter with 3/8" carriage bolts. Minimum of 2 bolts are required on both sides of the butt joint with construction adhesive utilized. D. Solar Panel Anchorage 1. The solar panels shall be mounted in accordance with the most recent "EcoFasten Solar Installation Manual", which can be found on the EcoFasten Solar website (www.ecofastensolar.com). If during solar panel installation, the roof framing members appear unstable or deflect non -uniformly, our office should be notified before proceeding with the installation. 2. The solar panels are 1112' thick and mounted 4112" off the roof for a total height off the existing roof of 6". At no time will the panels be mounted higher than 6" above the existing plane of the roof. 3. Maximum allowable pullout per lag screw (5/16" x 4'/2) is 235 lbs/inch of penetration as identified in the National Design Specifications (NDS) of timber construction specifications for Hem -Fir (North). Based on our evaluation, the pullout value, utilizing a penetration depth of 2112, is less than the maximum allowable per connection and therefore is adequate. 4. The maximum allowed spacing was calculated for the Wind Speed shown in paragraph B above, using the wind load uplift procedures of ASCE 7-10 and is specified below. The following values have been verified by in- house testing and the mounting hardware manufacturers' data, which are available upon request. Panel support connections shall be staggered to distribute load to adjacent members. E. Summary Based on the above evaluation, with the structural upgrade installed as prescribed and appropriate panel anchors being utilized, the roof system designed on will adequately support the additional loading imposed by the solar panels, if installed correctly. This evaluation has been performed for the structural elements only and verifies that they are in conformance with the 2012 International Residential Code, current industry standards and practice, and the information supplied to us at the time of this report. Mark these using a vertical (N -S) chalk line on the center of the rafters. Spacing may vary depending upon project specific structural requirements; i.e. high snow and wind load areas may require lesser bracket spacing in the E -W axis vs. the maximum spacing. Max spacing is 48" for portrait orientation and 72" for landscape orientation. Consult project layout diagram for project specific bracket spacing on the roof. • Install Rock -It Mounts to predetermined mount spacing. • The array skirt sections are the width of a typical 60 cell module - use the array skirt as a guide to lay out module placement. Note: The distance between the rows of mounts is calculated by the module dimension N -S plus 1 3/8" (35mm). Lag screw should be installed as close to center of exposed shingle as possible. GreenFaSTen FLaSHinG InSTaLL 1 Locate the rafters and snap horizontal and vertical lines to mark the installation position for each GreenFasten flashing. 2 Drill a pilot hole (1 /4" diameter) for the lag bolt. Backfill with sealant. EcoFasten Solar recommends an EPDM mastic. 3 Insert the flashing so the top part is under the next row of shingles and pushed far enough up slope to prevent water infiltration through vertical joint in shingles. The leading edge of flashing must butt against upper row of nails to prevent turning when torqued. 4 Line up pilot hole with GreenFasten flashing hole. Insert the lag bolt through the EPDM bonded washer, the Rock -It slide, the gasketed hole in the flashing and into the rafter. Torque: The range is between 100-140 torque inch -pounds depending on the type of wood and time of year. The visual indicator for proper torque is when the EPDM on the underside of the bonded washer begins to push out the sides as the washer compresses. If using an impact wrench to install the fasteners be careful not to over torque the fastener. You may need to stop and use a ratchet to finish the install. www.ecofastensoIar.com info@ecofastensolar.com 877-859-3947 ROCK -IT SYSTem inSTaLL 1 Install EcoFasten Solar Flashing with Rock -It Mounts Follow GreenFasten Install instructions for flashing and bracket install on composition shingle roofs. Maximum (STC) power per string, and minimum and maximum string lengths. This document explains how these values are determined and provides the string sizing rules for the different inverter and optimizer combinations. For additional system design information refer to the inverter and optimizer datasheets. Sizing rules typically depend on the type of inverters and optimizers used: * Inverters: single phase or three phase Optimizers: general or commercial Commercial optimizers can be used only with three phase inverters, while general optimizers can be used with both single and three phase inverters. General optimizers typically have one PV module per optimizer, and commercial optimizers typically have two modules. However these are not fixed requirements and as long as the cumulative power and voltage/current of the modules meets the optimizer specifications as detailed in the datasheet, connecting additional modules per optimizer is permitted (for example connecting 2x120W modules in series to a single P300 general optimizer). Refer to the Connecting Multiple Modules to Power Optimizers application note for details. In the context of this document, string length refers to the number of optimizers and modules in the string. When designing the installation make sure to maintain the maximum physical string length as well: The total cable length of the string (including power optimizers' cables) should not exceed 1000ft./300m from DC+ to DC- of the inverter (2,300ft./700m when using the SE14AKUS and SE33.3KUS inverters). Maximum String Power Maximum string power is simply the "Inverter Nominal DC Input Voltage" multiplied by the "Optimizer Maximum Output Current". These values can be found on the inverter and optimizer datasheets respectively. Table 1 details the values of available products. Table 1: Maximum string power ' For SE14AKUS only, when used with P600/P700/P730, it is allowed to install up to 650OW per string when 3 strings are connected to the inverter and when the maximum power difference between the strings is up to 1000W. Z For SE33.3KUS only, when used with P600/P700/P730, it is allowed to install up to 15000W per string when 3 strings are connected to the inverter and when the maximum power difference between the strings is up to 2000W. There is a buffer added to ensure the operability of the string also in some shading or fault conditions. The maximum number of optimizers per string was established to ensure proper communications between the optimizers and inverter. • When connecting multiple modules to commercial optimizers, in case of an odd number of modules per string it is allowed to connect one optimizer with one module, as long the minimum number of modules per string is maintained as well.
