Dear Mr. Odean: As requested we observed the excavation for the subject lot on October 6, 1996. The proposed house will have a crawl space. At the time of our visit the excavation had been dug to a depth of 3 to 41/2 ft. The soils exposed in the bottom consisted of slighUy moist, stiff, dark brown, calcareous, clay. Some loose existing fill was noted on the H est side and a drainpipe was noted on the north side. The exposed soils were similar to those described in our report. In our opinion Ihe house should be founded on a Type 1 foundation with a maximum soil pressure of 4,000 psf and a minimum dead load of 2,500 psf. As the risk of slab on grade movement is high, a structural Floor is recommended. Care should be taken to remove any fill from below the footings. The drain tile should be plugged with concrete.
