inspection, conducted when 25-75 percent of the roof covering is installed, prior to final
approval. Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) requires an approved inspection

~ As requested we drilled a boring at the northeast side of [he lot. The house is
built. The results of our analysis are at[ached.
Soil Profile: The soils encountered included 8 feet of clay and claystone fi(l
overlying 7'/z feet of stiff sandy clay which in turn overlies claystone bedrock from
depth 15 1/2 feet to, the bottom of the boring, 25 'h feet. When checked one day afrer
drilling Ehe boring had caved to depth 23 feet and no free water was encountered to
fliat depth. A graphic log of the boring is shown oa Fig. 1.
A swell-compression test was performed on a sample from depth 10 feet. The
results plotted on Fig. 2 show about 2% swell under a surcharge of 1000 psf. This is
considered to be low to moderate swell potential.
Foundation Recommendations: We recommend a drilled pier (Type 5) foundation
system for this house. The following is a summary oP recommendations for Type 5
foundation. A more detailed report was prepared under our Job No. 296 131 dated
August 8 and 30, 1996.
1) The piers should be designed for an allowable end bearing pressure of
20,000 psf and an allowable skin friction value of 2,000 psf for that
portion of the pier in bedrock.
2) Piers should also be designed for a minimum dead load pressuce of 15,000 psf
based on pier end area only.

3) Piers should penetrate at least three pier diameters into the bedrock. A
minimum penetration of 6 feet into the bedrock and a minimum pier length of
18 feet are recommended.
4) Piers should be reinforced their full length with one ft5 reinforcing rod for
each 16 inches of pier perimeter to resist tension created by the swelling soils.
5) A 4-inch void form should be provided Ueneath grade beams to prevent the
swelling soil and rock from exerting uplift forces on the grade beams and to
concentrate pier loadings. °
6) ' Concrete utilized in the piers should be a fluid mix with sufficient slump so
that concrete will fill the void between the reinforcing steel and the pier hole.
7) Pier holes should be properly cleaned prior to the placement of concrete.
8) Although free water was encountered in most of the borings, it is felt that
extensive dewatering will not be necessary. Dewatering equipment may be
required to reduce water infiltration into the pier holes. If water cannot be
removed prior to placement of concrete, the tremie method should be used
after the hole has been cleaned of spoil. In no case should concrete be placed
in more than 3 inches of water.
9) Care should be taken to prevent the forming of mushroom-shaped tops of the
piers which can increase uplift force on the piers from swelling soils.
Floor Slabs: Floor slabs present a problem where expansive materials are present
near floor slab elevation because sufficient dead load cannot be imposed on them to
resist the uplift pressure generated when the materials are wetted and expand. Since
most of the soils possess an expansive potential, structural floors should be considered
for most of the houses. We recommend that structural floors with crawl space below
be used for all floors in the building that will be sensitive to upward movement.
Slab-on-grade construction may be used in the garage area, or in the lots with
low swell potential The potential buyer should be made aware of the risk of distress.
In all areas where the claystone is at slab level, we recommend a structural floor.
To reduce the effects of some differential movement, nons[ructural floor slabs
should be separated from all bearing walls, columns and partition walls with
expansion joints which allow unrestrained vertical movement. Interior non-bearing

partitions resting on floor slabs should be provided with a slip joint at the bottom of
the wall so that, if the slab moves, the movement cannot be transmitted to the upper
structure. This detail is also important for wallboards, stairways and door frames.
Slip joints which allow at least 2 inches of vertical movement are recommended. All
plumbing lines should be pressure tested before backfilling to help reduce the po[ential
for wetting. Mechanical units should have flexible connections to pipes and ducts
supparted by upper floors. Floor slab control joints should be used to reduce damage
due to shrinkage cracking. Joint spacing and slab reinforcement should be established
by the designer based on experience and the intended slab use.
A minimum 4-inch layer of free-draining gravel should be placed immediately
beneath slabs-on-grade that are below ground level. This material should consist of
minus 2-inch aggregate with less than 50% passing the No. 4 sieve and less than 2%
passing the No. 200 sieve. The free-draining gravel will aide in drainage below the
slabs and should be connected to the underdrain system.
The above recommendations will not prevent slab heave if the expansive soils
underlying slabs-on-grade become wet. However, the recommendations will reduce
the effects if slab heave occurs.
Underdrain System: We recommend any below grade areas, such as crawlspace and
basement areas, be protec[ed from wetting and hydrostatic pressure buildup by an
underdrain system. '
The drains should consist of drainpipe placed in the bottom of the wall backfill
surrounded above the invert level with free-draining granular material. The drain
should be placed at each level of excavation and at least 1 foot below lowest adjacent
finish grade and sloped a[ a minimum 1% to a suitable gravity outlet. Free-draining
granular material used in the underdrain system should contain less than 2% passing
the No. 200 sieve, less than 50% passing the No. 4 sieve and have a maximum size of
2 inches. The drain gravel backfill should be at least 11h feet deep.
Surface Drainage
The following drainage precautions should be observed during construction and
maintained at all times afrer the building has been completed:

1) Inundation of the foundation excavations and underslab areas should be
avoided during construction.
2) Ex[erior backfill should be adjusted to near optimum moisture and compacted
to at least 95% of the maximum standard Proctor density in pavement and slab
areas and to a[ least 90% of the maximum standard Proctor density in
landscape areas.
3) The ground surface surrounding 8ie exterior of the building should be sloped
to drain away from the foundation in"all directions. We recommend a
minimum slope of 12 inches in the first 10 feet in unpaved areas and a
minimum slope of 3 inches in the first 10 feet in paved areas. Free-draining
wall backfill should be capped with about 2 feet of the on-site soils to reduce
surface water infiltration.
4) Roof downspouts and drains should discharge well beyond the limits of all
backfill.
Limitations: This study has been conducted ro supplement the basic report
referenced above. in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering
principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no other warranty either
expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report
are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory boring drilled atthe location
indicated on Fig. 1,'the proposed type of construc[ion and our experience in the area.
Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface conditions
identified at other exploratory borings. This repor[ has been prepared for the
exclusive use by our clientfor design purposes. We are not responsible for technical
interpretations by others of our information.
