REGARDING ROOF VENTILATION: Roof ventilation shall comply with IBC Sec. 1203.2 or IRC Sec. R806. The installation of ridge venting requires the installation or existence of soffit venting. For calculation purposes, one hat or turtle vent equal to one-half of one square foot of opening. Effective December 1, 2014, asphalt shingle installations require an approved midroof inspection, conducted when 25-75 percent of the roof covering is installed, prior to final approval. Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) is required on the entire roof when spaced or board sheathing with ANY gap exceeding one half inch exists. Sheathing and mid -roofs may be called in at the same time, one hundred percent of the sheathing must be complete and 25-75 percent of the mid -roof may be complete. Asphalt shingles are required to be fastened to the roof deck with a minimum of 6 nails per shingle. Ice and water shield is required. Eave and rake metal is required. A ladder extending 3 feet above the roof eave and secured in place is required to be provided for all roof inspections. Roof ventilation is required to comply with applicable codes and/or manufacturer installation instructions, whichever is more stringent. All review is based on these observations and the design criteria listed below and only deemed valid if provided information is true and accurate. On the above referenced project, the roof structural framing has been reviewed for additional loading due to the installation of the solar PV addition to the roof. The structural review only applys to the section of the roof that is directly supporting the solar PV system and its supporting elements. The observed roof framing is described below. If field conditions differ, contractor to notify engineer prior to starting construction. The roof structure of (MP1) consists of composition shingle on 1x decking that is supported by 2x6 rafters @ 24"o.c. paired with 2x6 ceiling joists @ 24"o.c.. The rafters have a max projected horizontal span of 8'-2", with a slope of 18 degrees. The rafters are connected at the ridge to a ridge board and are supported at the eave by a load bearing wall. The roof structure of (MP2) consists of composition shingle on 1x decking that is supported by nominal 2x6 rafters @ 24"o.c. paired with 2x6 ceiling joists @ 24"o.c.. The rafters have a max projected horizontal span of 10'-8", with a slope of 18 degrees. The rafters are connected at the ridge to a ridge board and are supported at the eave by a load bearing wall. The existing roof framing system of (MP1) is judged to be adequate to withstand the loading imposed by the installation of the solar panels. No reinforcement is necessary. The existing roof framing system of (MP2) is judged to be inadequate to withstand the loading imposed by the installation of the solar panels. Structural reinforcement is required. Sister upgrade is required for (MP2) on all rafters with horizontal spans greater than 9'-6". Stitch�new 2x6 DF#2 (min) to existing member with 5/16in GRK RSS screws @ 16"o.c. or 10d nails @ 6"o.c..
