RE: Repairs required for tile roofing installation.
Dear Frank:
I examined the repairs made toour attic that I required for the installation of concrete roof
tile. The repairs were made in keeping with my design intent. The work to stiffen the attic is
acceptable.
There was a concern on the part of the city inspector about the nailing of the sheathing on the
roof. The pattern is 8" on-center on the edges and 12" on-center in the field. Based on the
head size it appears the nails are a minimum of 8d and the nails are properly driven in the
sample examined.
I accept the sheathing nails as presented on this project for the installation of the new concrete

Dear Mr. Cosolo:
Thank you for the opportunity to examine your roof framing system to, determine the accept-
ability for the installation of a new roofing system. We examined the attic to see the roof sup-
ports, the house for existing drywall cracks or other evidence of movement and the exterior to
see if there were large deposits of leaves and other material that accumulate in the valleys.
There are always areas that are not observable and we attempted to determine the framing
method in those locations.
Please note, anytime you reroof there is a rapid change of loading as the old roof is removed
and the new roof installed. This change in loading, movement of materials and men, and the
pounding that occurs, can cause small drywall cracks. These are not structural. If you ob-
serve any cracking, please call our office so we can make sure that there is nothing else that
may have occurred.
There was no significant storage in the attic space. It is assumed that no additional storage
will be done in the attic. Loading the bottom chord of trusses can change their behavior. If
heavy items are to be stored in the attic consult with CSS, Inc. to make sure the loading is ac-
ceptable.

This framing is adequate. The rafter ties that are on every other rafter only stiffen this
model.
There are 5 sets of rafter on the front of the house that do not have the bracing and are too
long as shown below.

If the rafters are sistered with 10 foot sections they will be stiff enough. The model below
shows the rafters with 2x6 sisters installed.
This is adequate. The sistering shall be done as described below.
1. The connection is to be plated with a section of 2x6.

2. The section is to be 120" long and it will be set tight to the ridge.
3. The bottom end does not need to reach the top plate of the wall.
4. THE WORK IS BEST DONE AFTER THE OLD ROOF HAS BEEN REMOVED.
5. A strip can be cut in the ridge to allow the new sister to be slid along side the existing
and then it shall be secured as described below.
6. The top of the 2x6 shall be flush with the roof deck.
7. The wood is to be glued using OSI PL-400, PL-Pro, PL-Plus or Gorilla Glue applied
according to the glue manufacturer's instructions.
8. The 2x6 wood is to be attached using minimum 12d nails.
9. The nails can be pneumatically driven.
10.Install nails 4" on-center into the existing truss members.
The valley rafters along the ends of this front sections shall be stiffened by adding a 2x4 per-
pendicular to the existing valley rafter. The final configuration shall look like the photo be-
low.
2. The section shall be a minimum of 96" long starting at the bottom of the valley.
3. The 2x4 shall be attached by applying a bead of PL-400, PL-Pro or PL-Plus adhesive to teh
center of the 2x4 and then nailing it in place using minimum 12d nails 4" on-center driven
up into the existing valley rafter.
4. There are two valley rafters to be stiffened.

The "inverted T" shall be created by:
1. Adding a section of 2x4 to the bottom of the valley rafter.
This opinion is based on the conditions observed. There are sometimes areas of framing that
are not observable. Calculations for acceptability are based on the conditions observed using
current versions of analysis software. Change of use or loading by conditions outside of those
observed can change the results of the analysis. Alterations to the framing will require a new
analysis.
With these repairs, this house can carry an 11 psf concrete tile roofing system.
