N N U C zo M WHEqT~Q Building Guide c~ m C~L OR A~O Whether you hire a contractor or budd your project yourself, note: treated wood will last a long time, therefore so will your worlanansUip. You'll be happier - and your project will look better - if you take your rime and ob- serve good consuuction techniques. * Before you begin nailing lay out your lumber with the bes[-looking face eaposed. Decide wlilch pieces you want for visible areas, and wkuch pieces for understructure. * Sepaiate deck boards as follows to allow for expansion and conhaction. If heavy and wet, sepazate boards no more than 1/16" as some shrinicage will occur. lf light and dry, sepaiate boards no more tlian 1/8". * Avoid long spans in conshuctioa The geater the distance between supporting points, [he more force developed within the wood as it dries. Also avoid de- signs with long cantilevers imsecured at one end. * Use enough nails. Sldmping doesn't pay. Use two nails across a 2 x 4 and three across a 2 x 6. Drive nails at a slight angle towazd each other. * Nails and other hardware should be hot-dipped zinccoated or equally well protected material. Other- wise, weather may cause them to mst, leaving sireaks. * With a pneumatic nailer, use no more pressure than necessary to drive nails flush with the surface. * Screws take somewtta[ longer to drive than nails, but they hold boazds securely, allow for easier removal, aznd elimina[e unsighfly indentations from hammer blows. * To reduce splitting, drill a pilot hole about tbree quarters the diameter of the nail. For dense or briffie wood, gind shacpness from nails or blunt the points by strildng them carefully with a liammer. Blunt nails cut through; sharp ones pry apart. * Use 12d nails on nominal two-inch decldng. Use two at each joint with 2 x 4s laid flat; use three for 2 x 6s laid flat. lOd nails are recommended for 5/4" decking. * Lumber wider than six inches should not be used as a flat surface. Wide, fla[ boards are subject to ponding of rain water, which can lead to cupping problems. It is better to use two 2 x 6's tLan one 2 x] 2. * If a board is bowed, install it with tLe crown up. Giavity and the weight of people and furniture will flatten it. * If a board has a slight bend to it, it sometimes can be siraightened as it is nailed in place.
