How does frost heave effect Dek-Block Floating
Foundation Deck Systems?
The Dek-Block pier sits on to~ of the ground moving up and down just as
your driveway or sidewalk would. The structure is part of a s sy tem and is
designed to accommodate the frost movement.
Will my deck move sideways?
No. When frost heave occurs, the forces in the ground have nowhere to go
except up. The deck will move slightly up and down, but not from side to side.
Will my deck sink?
Used even on poor soil conditions, your deck will not sink. Fioating Foundation Deck Systems are designed
as weight distribution system, spreading the weight EVENLY across the ground.
How do 1 determine my soil conditions?
There is a simpie non-technical method to determine if your soil is suitable for a Floating Foundation
Deck System: the shoe print test. If a person's shoes sink into the ground while they are walking, the soil
may not be suitable.
How strong is the Dek-Block Floating Foundation Deck System?
When built according to DekBrands deck plans, Dek-Block Floating Foundation decks far exceed the minimur
structurai requirements for construction. They are STRONG, DURABLE, and SAFE. Each deck is designed fc
40 Ibs per square foot live load (people, furniture, etc.) and 12 Ibs per square foot dead load (deck materials).
Do building departments accept Dek-Block Floating Foundation decks?
DekBrands Floating Foundation Deck Systems have been designed in accordance with all
major building codes. Most of the Midwest and Northeastern States have adopted a form
of the Building Officials Code Administrators (BOCA)building code. The Mid-Atlantic
States have adopted the Council of American Building Officials (CABO) building code.
Both of these codes state that foundations must extend below the frost line "except where
erected upon solid rock or otherwise protected from frosY". Some states have adapted the
newer Intemational Building Code which does not require buildinq permits for structures of . `
four hundred square feet or less. When permits are required, they will normally be issued
based on DekBrands deck plans.
How do I get my DekBrands deck plans and obtain a building permit?
Downioad the architectural deck plans and buiiding code package from www.deckplans.com or call us at 1-800-66,
2705 (5:00 am to 9:00 pm CST, 7 days a week) and we will mail or fax you a package. Take these plans and coc
package to your local building department for approval.
What do I do if my local Building Department has further questions about Dek-Bioc
Floating Foundations decks?
DekBrands is available to answer any questions they may have, at 1-800-664-2705. DekBrands also
has engineers available if there are additional, specific issues.

Re: Proposal/Agreement for Geotechnical Engineering Services
Addition to Single-Family Residence
10175 West 34`h Avenue
Wheat Ridge, Colorado
Terracon Reference No. 2502370
Terracon is pleased to submit this proposal for providing geotechnical exploration and engineering
services for the subject project. This proposal includes an outline of the project information provided to
us, the proposed scope of services, our fee and the proposed schedule.
PROJECT INFORMATION
Based on the information provided, we understand the project will include the construction of an
addition to a single-family residence. The existing residence is a one-story structure with a full
basement and crawl space supported on drilled piers or caissons. The size of the addition will be on
the order of about 1,200 square feet in plan area and will be located towards the back of the existing
residence. We assume that the addition will be a single-story, slab-on-grade structure. We anticipate
that the addition will consist of wood frame construction. Maximum wall and column loads are
anticipated to be relatively light.
PROPOSED SCOPE OF SERVICES
The purpose of the geotechnical engineering services will be to evaluate the subsurface soil, bedrock,
and groundwater conditions, and to determine geotechnical engineering criteria for the design and
development of the project. We propose to explore the subsurface conditions with one test boring
located near the proposed residence. it is our understanding that a section of chain link fence has
been removed to provide access to construction equipment.

ProposallAgreement for Geotechnical Engineering Services Terracon
Hahn Construction
Terracon Reference No.2502370
Based upon our experience with the general soil conditions in the area of the project, we propose to
the drill the test boring to a depth of 25 feet. The boring will be advanced to the minimum depth
outlined unless refusal to drilling is encountered prior to full boring advancement. The depth and
location of the test boring may be further adjusted depending upon actual subsurface conditions
encountered. We assume that the proposed addition area is accessible to conventional truck-
mounted drilling equipment. One trip will be made to the site to "clear" underground utilities with
UNCC. A private locator may be used if UNCC can not accurately mark the utility locations. In
addition, information regarding the location of utilities entering the residence should be provided, if
possible in order to avoid disruption during drilling operations.
During the drilling operations, a field engineer or geologist will log the boring, record the results of
penetration tests, and will obtain representative samples for further laboratory evaluation. Ground
water measurements will be made in the boring during exploration and a minimum of 24-hours after
drilling. Drilling and sampling will be conducted in general accordance with applicable ASTM or local
standards.
At the completion of drilling operations, the samples will be returned to our laboratory where they will
be examined by the project geotechnical engineer. At that time, the field descriptions will be confirmed
or modified, a final boring log prepared, and an applicable laboratory testing program will be
formulated.
Relatively undisturbed samples may be tested for moisture content, dry density, expansion, and
compression characteristics. Representative disturbed samples may be tested for liquid limit, plasticity
index, percent fines, and remolded expansion potential upon saturation. Laboratory testing will be
conducted in general accordance with applicable ASTM or other locally recognized standards.
The information obtained from the field exploration and laboratory testing program will be used to
evaluate the soil and subsurface conditions at the project site. From these determinations,
engineering analyses will be undertaken in order to formulate specific design criteria for the project.
Based upon our analyses, a geotechnical engineering report will be prepared. The following
information will be provided in the report:
• A discussion of the general subsurface conditions including soil and
groundwater conditions;
. Location and characteristics of groundwater and recommended dewatering
methods (if applicable);

Re: Proposal/Agreement for Geotechnical Engineering Services
Addition to Single-Family Residence
10175 West 34ih Avenue
Wheat Ridge, Colorado
Terrecon Reference No.

• A discussion of the general subsurface conditions including soil and
groundwater conditions;
• Location and characteristics of groundwater and recommended dewatering
methods (if applicable);
