December 19, 2003 Mr. AI Hoppa 4030 South Willow Way Demer, CO 80237 RE: Report of Findings - Asbestos Bulk Sampling Residential Sh-ucture, Work Shed, & Stonge Shed 3333 Wadsworth Boulevazd, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 Project No. 031213 Deaz Mr. Hoppa: D&D Environmenta] Consulting, Inc. (D&D) is pleased to provide the resulu of the bulk sampies collected of suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from the residential swctures located at 3333 Wadsworth Boulevazd, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The bulk samples were collected on December 15, 2003 by D&D Building Inspectors, certified and accredited by the Endvonmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Colorndo. UNDERSTANDING OF THE SITUATION D&D understands that you were seeking a professional environmental consulting company to collect representative bulk samples of suspect building materials from the above referenced structures. In addition, D&D personnel understood that the asbestos sampling was completed to facilitate the demolition of the structure using conventional techniques. SCOPE OF WORK The work scope for this project consisted of a walk tlvough of the referenced structures to identify suspect building materials that may contain asbestos and to collect and submit for analysis representative bulk samples of those identified suspect materials. In addition, ihe work scope for this project included prepazation of a report of findings. Based on the site visit and walk through, suspect materials were identified within the residential swcture and sixteen representative bulk samples were colleted and submitted for asbestos content analysis. Suspect materials were not identified in the work shed and the stonge shed. The bulk samples were collected of the following materials: . Sheet flooring - 2 types . Drywall / joint compound . Ceiling tile adhesive . Exaerior transite siding . Plaster ANALYTICALPROCEDURES The bulk samples collected of suspect ACM were delivered to DCM Science I.aboratory, Inc., a National Valuntary Labontory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) asbastos laboratory located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado for standard 3-5 day mrn around analysis. According to the analytical laboratory, the bulk samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 600/R-93/116. Small por[ions of the sampie were placed in Series: E High Dispersion Refractive Index Liquid on a microscope slide. The characteristics of the fibers were compazed to ihe known properties of asbestos fibers for dispersion color, polariry, extinction and general morphology. Sample content (given by percentage) was made by visual estimates by comparison of asbestos fibers to total materials. RESULTS The US Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Colorado Air Qualiry Control Commission, considers a material as asbestos containing if the reported amount of asbestos is greater than one percent. According to the analytical report, of the 16 bulk saznples collected and submitted for asbestos content analysis, the exterior transite siding was reported as containing seven percent chrysotile asbestos and the mastic underneath the white sheet flooring located in the west bedroom was reported as containing 67 percent asbestos. One of the drywall joint compound (mud) bulk samples was reported as containing two percent chrysotile asbestos. The Colorado Deparhnent of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) issued a policy statement regarding demolition and renovation projecu impacting asbestos containing drywall joint compound. A summaryof that palicy follows. Drywall mud has been found, in many situations, to contain significant amounu of asbestos while the substrate material that it is applied over it may not contain asbestos. According to the State of Colorado, if the composite anatysis (percent of asbestos in the combined mud/drywall) indicates an asbestos content of one-percent or less, even though the mud may contain greater than one-percent, the material is not considered asbestos containing for the purposes of demolition of the entire wall, and therefore dces not fall under the asbestos abatement requ'uements of Regulation 8. However, if the drywall mud iuelf is impacted by sanding, drilling or scraping, chese activities may fall under the CDPHE Regulation No. 8. Trace amounts of asbestos were found in the ceiling tile adhesive. This material may remain intact as long as conventional demolition techniques aze used. However under the OSHA regulations, the demolition contractor must be notified of the location and the quantities of the trace amounts of ACM reported. The remaining suspect materials were reported as none detected for asbestos content. The chain of wstody sample data sheeu and analytical report are attached. SUMMARY In summary, a licensed asbestos abatement contractor prior to demolition activities must remove ihe exterior transite siding and the white sheet flooring. Suspect materials aze sometimes located behind walls and above ceilings and aze considered inaccessible, therefore all materials that contain asbestos may not have been observed or sampled. If additional suspect asbestos containing materials aze identified during demolition, all activities should stop until these materials are sampled. Work should not resume until the results are reported and removal completed, if required.
