The roof framing differed from the original assumptions and additional support was requested to make the roof ceiling structurally sound. The residence is a ranch style home, built in 1952, with a living space conversion at the garage area. The front of the residence faces East. Observations & Conclusion The roof is a hip roof with that was A-framed/collar tied between rafters. The roof bottom chords switched directions at the load bearing walls causing the need for a beam. Additional bearing was verified in the crawlspace foundation. The repair was done and approved as follows: Flush 16 -foot beam running bearing wall to bearing wall and only picking up this point load (3)- 1 3/4" x 9 1/2" LVL beam with (4)-2x4 posts under each end. 2x4 roof bottom chords flush mount to new beam. • New beam bearing and (4)-2x4 posts are bearing directly over double joists bearing over the wood beam with a supporting CMU concrete foundation footing at the crawlspace. The opinions provided above are based on a reasonable degree of engineering probability. The repair is follows: • Approximately 12 ft long - (3)-1 3/4" x 7 1/4" LVL beam at removed center wall. Place (4)-2x4 post at wall and hang into flush 16 ft beam with HUC68 hanger. • Flush 16 foot beam running bearing wall to bearing wall and only picking up this point load (3)- 1 3/4" x 9 1/2" LVL beam with (4)-2x4 posts under each end. • Approximately 10 ft long beam at kitchen — (2)-1 3/4" x 7 1/4" LVL beam with (3)-2x4 posts each end of bearing. • Collar tie all roof rafters at 1/3 height from peak that aren't already done so with (3)-16d nails each end. In regard to the opening at the kitchen/ converted garage. With an opening of 3-4 feet in width, a 2- 2x8 header with a trimmer and king stud will suffice. The roof bottom chords switched directions at the load bearing walls causing the removal of a couple walls to have structural Additional bearing should be verified in the crawlspace foundation if this is to be done. The repair is follows: • Approximately 12 ft long - (3)-1 3/4" x 7 1/4" LVL beam at removed center wall. Place (4)-2x4 post at wall and hang into flush 16 ft beam with HUC68 hanger. • Flush 16 foot beam running bearing wall to bearing wall and only picking up this point load (3)- 1 3/4" x 9 1/2" LVL beam with (4)-2x4 posts under each end. • Approximately 10 ft long beam at kitchen — (2)-1 3/4" x 7 'A" LVL beam with (3)-2x4 posts each end of bearing. • Collar tie all roof rafters at 1/3 height from peak that aren't already done so with (3)-16d nails each end.
