This study was performed in general accordance with our proposal number P17.22.075, executed June 29, 2017. This geotechnical summary should be used in conjunction with the entire report for design and/or construction purposes. It should be recognized that specific details were not included or fully developed in this section, and the report must be read in its entirety for a comprehensive understanding of the items contained herein. The section titled General Comments should be read for an understanding of the report limitations. • Subsurface Conditions: Subsurface conditions encountered at the site included approximately 3 feet of existing man-made fill material comprised of sandy lean clay to clayey sand. Native silty to clayey sands were encountered underlying the fill and transitioned into fine to coarse sand with some gravel at a depth of about 14 feet below existing site grade. Sedimentary claystone bedrock was encountered below the sands at a depth of about 16 feet below existing site grade and extended to the full depth of exploration. Groundwater was encountered in our boring during drilling at a depth of about 14 feet below existing site grade. When checked about one week later, groundwater was encountered at a depth of about 12% feet below existing site grade. Other specific information regarding the subsurface conditions is shown on the attached Boring Logs. • Existing Fill: As discussed, approximately 3 feet of existing man-made fill was encountered in our boring. We assume that the fill was placed as part of the existing development of the site. Based on the limited field and laboratory test data, the existing fill appears to be relatively compact. However, it is possible that unsuitable materials (such as organics and construction debris) may also be present within or buried by the fill. We recommend that additional observation and testing of the existing fill (where present) be performed prior to construction of foundations, slabs, or other Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions —4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Proiect No. 17.22.118 features on the site. Where unsuitable materials are encountered, some limited removal and recompaction may be needed. • Foundations and Floor Slabs: Based on the results of our field and laboratory testing, we believe spread footing foundations and conventional slab -on -grade floors will provide acceptable performance for the proposed additions. Movement associated with properly designed spread footings and floor slabs bearing on these soils is expected to be within generally accepted tolerance of about 1 inch for total foundation and floor slab movement. Foundation excavations should be evaluated by CGG to confirm or modify our recommendations. Where any significant layers of loose or low-density materials are encountered, some limited removal, moisture -conditioning, and recompaction will be required. Detailed design and construction recommendations are provided in the report. Surface Drainage: The amount of movement associated with foundations, floor slabs, pavements, etc. will be related to the wetting of underlying supporting soils. Therefore, it is imperative the recommendations outlined in the "Grading and Drainage" section of this report be followed to reduce potential movement. We appreciate being of service to you in the geotechnical engineering phase of this project, and are prepared to assist you during the construction phases as well. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions concerning this report or any of our testing, inspection, design and consulting services. Sincerely, Cole Garner Geotechnical Glenn D. The purpose of these services is to provide information and geotechnical engineering recommendations relative to: • Subsurface soil and bedrock conditions • Groundwater conditions • Foundation design and construction • Lateral earth pressures • Floor slab design and construction • Below -grade construction • Earthwork • Drainage The recommendations contained in this report are based upon the results of field and laboratory testing, engineering analyses, our experience with similar subsurface conditions and structures, and our understanding of the proposed project. PROJECT INFORMATION We understand that the project will consist of the construction of one-story additions to the existing single-family residence at the subject site. We understand that the existing residence is supported on a spread footing foundation. Proposed construction will include a new entryway addition to the front of the house, and a full length addition to the back of the house, as well as construction of a new attached three car garage to the southwest side of the house. We understand that the existing one-story detached garage will be demolished and removed from the site. We anticipate the proposed additions t Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 will include wood -framed construction supported on a reinforced concrete foundation. We assume a slab -on -grade floor will be utilized for the garage floor, and that a crawl space will be utilized for the home additions. Although not provided, we assume structural loading will include maximum wall and column loads on the order of about of about 2 to 4 kips per linear foot, and 50 kips, respectively. If our assumptions above are not accurate, or if you have additional useful information, please inform us as soon as possible. SITE EXPLORATION PROCEDURES The scope of the services performed for this project included site reconnaissance by a field engineer, a subsurface exploration program, laboratory testing and engineering analysis. Field Exploration: We investigated the subsurface conditions on the site with a total of one test boring. The boring was advanced with a truck -mounted drilling rig utilizing 4 -inch diameter, solid stem auger to a depth of about 35 feet below existing site grades. A lithologic log of the boring was recorded by our field personnel during the drilling operations. At selected intervals, samples of the subsurface materials were obtained by driving modified California barrel samplers. Penetration resistance measurements were obtained by driving the sample barrel into the subsurface materials with a 140 -pound automatic hammer failing 30 inches. The penetration resistance value is a useful index to the consistency, relative density or hardness of the materials encountered. Groundwater measurements were made in the boring at the time of site exploration and about one week later. The boring was loosely backfilled with the auger cuttings upon completion of groundwater measurements. Laboratory Testing: Samples retrieved during the field exploration were returned to the laboratory for observation by the project geotechnical engineer, and were classified in general accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System described in Appendix C. Bedrock was classified according to the General Notes for Rock Classification. At that time, an applicable laboratory -testing program was formulated to determine engineering properties of the subsurface materials. Following the completion of the laboratory testing, the field descriptions were confirmed or modified as necessary, and Boring Logs were prepared. These logs are presented in Appendix A. Laboratory test results are presented in Appendix B. These results were used for the geotechnical engineering analyses and the development of foundation and earthwork recommendations. Laboratory tests were performed in general accordance with the applicable local or other accepted standards. rJ Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 Selected soil and bedrock samples were tested for the following engineering properties: • Water content • Dry density • Swell/Consolidation SITE CONDITIONS • Grain size • Plasticity Index • Water-soluble sulfates The project site is located at 4541 Reed Street in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Existing development on the lot consists of a one-story residential home that includes a basement level. The home is centrally located on the lot. A one-story detached garage is present in the southwest corner of the lot. An existing concrete driveway is present along the southern property boundary. At the time of our field exploration, existing vegetation on the lot consisted of a low growth of grass as well as multiple bushes/shrubs. Several mature trees were also present on the lot. The lot is generally even with a slight downward slope toward Reed Street. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Soil and Bedrock Conditions: Subsurface conditions encountered at the site included approximately 3 feet of existing man-made fill material comprised of sandy lean clay to clayey sand. Other specific information regarding the subsurface conditions is shown on the attached Boring Logs. Field and Laboratory Test Results: Field test results indicated that the sandy clay/clayey sand fill soils varied from medium stiff/loose in consistency/relative density, respectively. The silty to clayey sand soils varied from loose to medium dense while the underlying fine to coarse sands were medium dense. The bedrock ranged from firm to medium hard. The clay fill soils are considered moderately plastic and a sample of the clay fill was non -expansive at existing moisture content. The underlying sand soils are generally considered non -plastic and non -expansive. Groundwater Conditions: Groundwater was encountered in our boring during drilling at a depth of about 14 feet below existing site grade. When checked about one week later, groundwater was encountered at a depth of about 12-%: feet below existing site grade. Based upon review of U.S. Geological Survey Maps ('Hillier, et al, 1983), regional groundwater beneath the project area is expected 1 Hillier, Donald E.; Schneider, Paul A., Jr.; and Hutchinson, E. Carter, 1983, Depth to Water Table (1976-1977) in the Greater Denver Area, Front Range Urban Corridor, Colorado, United States Geological Survey, Map 1-856-K. 3 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 to be encountered in unconsolidated alluvial deposits at depths generally between 10 and 20 feet below the ground surface. Zones of perched and/or trapped groundwater, where not already present, may occur at times in the subsurface soils overlying bedrock, on top of the bedrock surface, within fractures of the bedrock, or within sandstone seams. The location and amount of perched water is dependent upon several factors including hydrologic conditions, type of site development, irrigation demands on or adjacent to the site, fluctuations in water features, seasonal and weather conditions. ENGINEERING RECOMMENDATIONS Geotechnical Considerations: Based on the information obtained from our subsurface exploration and laboratory testing of selected samples the site appears suitable for proposed residential additions. The soils encountered near foundation bearing elevations are considered suitable for support of conventional spread footing foundations and slab -on -grade floors at the site. However, approximately 3 feet of existing man-made fill was encountered in our boring. We assume that the fill was placed as part of the existing development of the site. Based on the limited field and laboratory test data, the existing fill appears to be relatively compact. However, it is possible that unsuitable materials (such as organics and construction debris) may also be present within or buried by the fill. We recommend that additional observation and testing of the existing fill (where present) be performed prior to construction of foundations, slabs, or other features on the site. Where unsuitable existing fills or other unsuitable materials (loose sands, etc.) are encountered, some limited removal and recompaction may be needed. Design and construction recommendations for the foundation systems and other earth -connected phases of the project are outlined below. Foundation Design and Construction: Based on the subsurface conditions encountered at the site, the use of spread footing foundations is considered feasible for support of the proposed additions, provided that typical foundation movements can be tolerated. The geotechnical engineershould be contacted to observe the soil conditions exposed in the foundation excavation(s) to confirm the soils are suitable for support of new foundations. if unsuitable materials are encountered, some limited removal and recompaction could be required. Since the foundations supporting the additions will be subject to movement relative to the existing structure, it is recommended that the proposed additions be constructed structurally independent of the existing building (if possible). The influence and interaction of existing and proposed footings on the foundation soils should be evaluated and taken into account in the design of the proposed additions. Care should be taken during construction to avoid affecting the foundation of the existing structure. 4 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 The following foundation design criteria may be used for the structural design of foundations. Foundation Design Criteria Design Value Bearing Soils Undisturbed native sand soils or properly compacted fill materials approved by the Geotechnical Engineer Maximum net allowable bearing pressure 2,000 psf Min. depth below grade, exterior wall footings 36 inches Min. depth below grade, interior footings 12 inches Estimated total foundation movement 1 inch Estimated differential movement % to Y. inch The design bearing pressure applies to dead loads plus design live load conditions. The design bearing pressure may also be increased by 1/3 when considering total loads that include wind or seismic conditions. Additional foundation movements could occur if excessive water from any source infiltrates the foundation soils; therefore, proper drainage should be provided in the final design and during construction. Failure to maintain proper surface drainage could result in excessive soil -related foundation movement. Footings and foundations should be reinforced as necessary to reduce the potential for distress caused by foundation movement. As discussed, CGG should be contacted to observe all foundation excavations, prior to forming for footing construction. If any areas of loose or low-density soils are observed, limited removal, moisture conditioning, and recompaction may be required. Lateral Earth Pressures: Earth pressures will be influenced by structural design of the walls, conditions of wall restraint, methods of construction, wetting of backfill materials, and/or compaction and the strength of the materials being restrained. Loads that should be considered by the structural engineer on walls are shown below. Finished 1 H (ftj P< 5 Pi Active Pressure assumes movement At -Rest Pressure should be used where movement is restrained a s = Z Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 Active earth pressure is commonly used for design of freestanding cantilever retaining walls and assumes wall movement. The "at -rest" condition assumes no wall rotation. Walls with unbalanced backfill levels on opposite sides (i.e. basement or crawispace walls) should be designed for earth pressures at least equal to those indicated in the following table. The recommended design lateral earth pressures do not include a factor of safety and do not provide for possible hydrostatic pressure on the walls. EARTH PRESSURE COEFFICIENTS Earth Coefficient for backfill Equivalent fluid Surcharge Earth pressure pressure type pressure, pcf pressure Pl PZ psf conditions psf Active (Ka) On-site clay soils - 0.38 45 (0.38)S (45)H At -Rest (Ko) On-site clay soils - 0.54 65 (0.54)S (65)H Passive (Kp) On-site clay soils — 2.3 275 --- --- Conditions applicable to the above conditions include: • for active earth pressure, wall must rotate about base, with top lateral movements 0.01 Z to 0.02 Z, where Z is wall height • for passive earth pressure, wall must move horizontally to mobilize resistance • uniform surcharge, where S is surcharge pressure • in-situ soil backfill weight a maximum of 120 pcf • horizontal backfill, compacted to at least 95 percent of standard Proctor maximum dry density • loading from heavy compaction equipment not included • no groundwater acting on wall • no safety factor included • ignore passive pressure in frost zone Backfill placed against the structure should consist of on-site soils processed to a soil -like consistency with a maximum size of about 4 to 6 inches. Backfill should be moisture conditioned to near optimum, placed in relatively thin lifts appropriate for the compaction equipment used. Backfill of shallow crawispace walls and interior backfill should be compacted to at least 95 percent of standard Proctor dry density. Care should be used during the backfill process not to over -compact backfill and cause damage to basement walls, window wells, and other features. We typically recommend that exterior basement (if used) wall backfill should be compacted to at least 90 percent of standard Proctor dry density (ASTM D698). As such, some settlement of the backfill should be anticipated and should be repaired immediately to prevent ponding of water adjacent to foundations. We recommend a perimeter drain be installed at the foundation level to control the water level behind any basement/retaining/crawlspace walls. If this is not possible, then combined hydrostatic and lateral 6 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 earth pressures should be calculated for lean clay backfill using an equivalent fluid weighing 90 and 100 pcf for active and at -rest conditions, respectively. These pressures do not include the influence of surcharge, equipment or floor loading, which should be added. Heavy equipment should not operate within a distance closer than the exposed height of retaining walls to prevent lateral pressures more than those provided. Seismic Considerations: Based on the soil conditions encountered in the test holes drilled on the site, we estimate that a Site Class D is appropriate for the site according to the 2015 International Building Code (Section 1613.3.2 referencing Table 20.3-1 of ASCE 7, Chapter 20). This parameter was estimated based on extrapolation of data beyond the deepest depth explored, using methods allowed by the code. Actual shear wave velocity testing/analysis and/or exploration to 100 feet was not performed. Below -Grade Construction: We understand that the existing residence includes a basement level and that no issues related to groundwater/perched water development have been reported. We typically recommend the installation of a perimeter drain system for below grade areas in order to collect and divert any perched groundwater that may develop. To reduce the potential for perched groundwater to impact foundation -bearing soils and enter below - grade areas, installation of a perimeter drainage system around the proposed crawl space foundation is recommended. In our opinion, the drainage system should be constructed around the exterior perimeter of the foundation, sloped at a minimum of 1/8 inch per linear foot, and should direct perched water to a sump pit where accumulated water may be pumped outside of the below grade area, well away from the home. Where perimeter drainage systems are utilized, they should consist of a minimum 4 -inch diameter perforated or slotted pipe, embedded in free -draining gravel, placed in a trench at least 12 inches in width. The edge of the trench should be sloped at a 1:1 slope beginning at the bottom outside edge of the footing. The trench should not be cut vertically at the edge of the footing. The bottom of the trench should be sloped as directed toward the outfall of the drain system and lined with a polyethylene moisture barrier that is sealed to the foundation walls and extended to at least the edge of the backfill zone. Gravel should extend a minimum of 3 inches beneath the bottom of the pipe and at least 6 inches above the pipe. The gravel should be covered with drainage fabric prior to placement of foundation backfill. A general construction detail of the recommended system is attached. Experience indicates that over a period of time, moist conditions and possibly standing water can develop in crawl space areas. Crawl space areas should be well ventilated to help control humidity and to facilitate moisture release. To help promote drainage towards the perimeter of the structure, we suggest "crowning" the subgrade at the center of the crawl space area. To further control humidity, consideration could be given to placing a vapor retarder on the exposed soils in the crawl space. The vapor retarder should be sealed at joints and attached to concrete foundation elements. 7 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions -4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 Floor Slab Design and Construction: As discussed, the soils encountered on this lot exhibited low expansive potential. This testing was conducted in part to evaluate the risk of movement of conventional slab -on -grade floors. The Slab Performance Risk Categories as defined by the Colorado Association of Geotechnical Engineers (CAGE) are outlined below: Slab Performance Risk Category Representative Percent Swell (500 psf Surcharge) Representative Percent Swell (1,000 psf Surcharge) Low 0 to less than 3 0 to less than 2 Moderate 3 to less than 5 2 to less than 4 High 5 to less than 8 4 to less than 6 Very High 8 or more 6 or more Note: The representative percent swell values presented are not necessarily measured values; rather, they are a judgment of the swell of the soil and/or bedrock profile likely to influence slab performance. According to CAGE recommendations, the use of a slab -on -grade floor system is generally considered acceptable (typical movements will be within generally acceptable tolerances) when bearing on soils or bedrock within the Low and Moderate Slab Performance Risk Categories. The soils encountered on this lot are in the Low Slab Performance Risk Category; therefore, the use of a slab -on -grade floor system is considered suitable at the site. Assuming soil conditions are similar to those encountered in our test boring, we believe there is low risk of post -construction floor slab movement. Typically, slab -on -grade floors will be subject to some movement, even when bearing on low expansive, properly compacted subgrade. We believe that total and differential floor slab movement could be on the order of 1 inch, when bearing on approved soils. If this degree of movement cannot be accepted, the use of a structural floor system, supported independent of the subgrade soils, is recommended as a positive means of eliminating floor system movement. Slab -on -grade subgrade soils should be evaluated prior to foundation construction and all subgrade soils prepared as outlined in the "Earthwork" section of this report. For structural design of concrete slabs - on -grade, a modulus of subgrade reaction of 100 pounds per cubic inch (pci) may be used for floors supported on existing or compacted soils at the site. Additional floor slab design and construction recommendations are as follows: • Positive separations and/or isolation joints should be provided between slabs and all foundations, columns or utility lines to allow independent movement. • Control joints should be provided in slabs to control the location and extent of cracking. 8 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions —4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 • A minimum 2 -inch void space should be constructed below non-bearing partition walls placed on the floor slab. Special framing details should be provided at doorjambs and frames within partition walls to avoid potential distortion. Partition walls should be isolated from suspended ceilings. The thickness of the partition void should be checked periodically and adjusted as needed to maintain a void space. • Interior trench backfill placed beneath slabs should be compacted in accordance with recommended specifications outlined below. • The use of a vapor retarder should be considered beneath concrete slabs on grade that will be covered with wood, tile, carpet or other moisture sensitive or impervious coverings, or when the slab will support equipment sensitive to moisture. When conditions warrant the use of a vapor retarder, the slab designer and slab contractor should refer to ACI 302 for procedures and cautions regarding the use and placement of a vapor retarder. • Floor slabs should not be constructed on frozen subgrade. • Other design and construction considerations, as outlined in Section 302.111 of the ACI Design Manual, are recommended. Final Grading, Surface Drainage and Landscaping: All grades must be constructed to provide positive drainage away from structure during construction, and it is imperative that grades be maintained throughout the life of the proposed residence. Water permitted to pond near or adjacent to the perimeter of structure (either during or post -construction) can result in significantly higher soil movements than those discussed in this report. As a result, any estimations of potential movement described in this report cannot be relied upon if positive drainage is not constructed and maintained, and water is allowed to infiltrate the supporting subgrade. We typically recommend exposed ground around foundations be sloped at a minimum of 10 percent grade for at least 10 feet beyond the perimeter of the building, where possible. Flatter slopes maybe appropriate in areas where site constraints require. The use of swales, chases and/or area drains may be required to facilitate drainage in unpaved areas around the perimeter of the building. After building construction and prior to completion of landscaping, we recommend that verification of final grading be performed to document that positive drainage, as described above, has been achieved. A review of grading should also be performed after landscaping to assure grades have been maintained. Areas where foundation backfill has settled should be repaired immediately to prevent ponding of water adjacent to foundations. Based on our experience, roof drain downspouts tend to deliver large amounts of water near foundations. Downspouts should discharge on pavements or be extended away from the structure a 0 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions —4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 minimum of 5 to 10 feet through the use of splash blocks or downspout extensions. Roof drains may also be designed to discharge to storm sewers by solid, rigid PVC pipe or daylighted to a detention pond or other appropriate outfall, however, a Civil Engineer should be consulted to design the system if this option is considered. We do not recommend discharging flow below the ground surface using flexible pipe, as pipe grades and pipe integrity are difficult to maintain using this product. Outfalls should be protected from damage, blockage, and small animals. Landscaped irrigation adjacent to foundations should be minimized or eliminated. Planters located adjacent to the structure should preferably be self-contained. Sprinkler mains and spray heads should be located a minimum of 5 feet away from the building line and outside the foundation backfill zone, if possible. Trees or other vegetation whose root systems have the ability to remove excessive moisture from the subgrade and foundation soils should not be planted next to the structure. Trees and shrubbery should be kept away from the exterior edges of foundations, a distance at least equal to 1.5 times their expected mature height. Backfill against footings, exterior walls and in utility and sprinkler line trenches should be well compacted and free of all construction debris to reduce the possibility of moisture infiltration. Earthwork: • General Considerations: The following presents recommendations for site preparation, excavation, subgrade preparation and placement of engineered fills on the project. All earthwork on the project should be observed and evaluated by CGG. The evaluation of earthwork should include observation and testing of engineered fills, subgrade preparation, foundation bearing soils and other geotechnical conditions exposed during the construction of the project. • Site Preparation: Strip and remove existing vegetation and other deleterious materials from proposed building and pavement areas. All exposed surfaces should be free of mounds and depressions that could prevent uniform compaction. Stripped materials consisting of vegetation and organic materials should be wasted from the site or used to revegetate landscaped areas or exposed slopes after completion of grading operations. As discussed, loose or low-density soils could be encountered in excavations at the site. These materials may not be suitable for support of foundations directly. CGG should be contacted to observe all foundation excavations, prior to forming for footing construction. If any areas of loose or low-density soils are observed, some limited removal, moisture conditioning, and recompaction may be required. 10 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 It is anticipated that excavations for the proposed construction can be accomplished with conventional, heavy-duty earthmoving equipment. The stability of the site subgrade will be affected by precipitation, repetitive construction traffic, or other factors. If unstable conditions are encountered or develop during construction, workability may be improved by scarifying and aeration. Overexcavation of wet zones and replacement with granular materials may be necessary. • Subgrade Preparation: The engineer should evaluate foundation subgrade soils in order to confirm or modify our recommendations for the bearing soils. All subgrade soils below new fill, slab -on - grade floors, exterior PCC flatwork, and pavements should be scarified to a minimum depth of 12 inches, moisture conditioned and compacted as discussed below just prior to construction of these elements. • Compaction Requirements: Clean on-site soils or approved imported materials may be used as fill material. Engineered fill for site development, grading, and below foundations and floor slabs should be placed and compacted in horizontal lifts, using equipment and procedures that will produce recommended moisture contents and densities throughout the lift. Fill soils should be placed and compacted according to the following criteria: Item Description Fill Lift Thickness 8 to 12 inches or less in loose thickness Clayey soils: 95% of standard Proctor dry density (ASTM D698); Compaction Requirements Non -plastic sands: 95% of modified Proctor dry density (ASTM 1557) Clayey soils: Optimum to +3% above optimum moisture content Moisture Content Non -plastic sands: -2% below to +2% above optimum We recommend engineered fill be tested for moisture content and compaction during placement on a regular basis. Should the results of the in-place density tests indicate the specified moisture or compaction limits have not been met, the area represented by the test should be reworked and retested as required until the specified moisture and compaction requirements are achieved. The compacted soils should not be allowed to dry out prior to foundation/floor slab construction. • Excavation and Trench Construction: The clays are expected to stand on relatively steep slopes, however, caving sand soils may also be encountered in excavations during construction. The individual contractor(s) should be made responsible for designing and constructing stable, temporary excavations as needed to maintain stability of both the excavation sides and bottom. All excavations should be sloped or shored in the interest of safety following local and federal regulations, including current OSHA excavation and trench safety standards. The soils to be penetrated by the proposed excavations may vary significantly across the site. The contractor should verify that similar conditions exist throughout the proposed area of excavation. If 11 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 different subsurface conditions are encountered at the time of construction, the actual conditions should be evaluated to determine any excavation modifications necessary to maintain safe conditions. As a safety measure, it is recommended that all vehicles and soil piles be kept to a minimum lateral distance from the crest of the slope equal to no less than the slope height. The exposed slope face should be protected against the elements. Additional Design and Construction Considerations: • Exterior Slab Design and Construction: Flatwork and pavements will be subject to post construction movement due to backfill settlement and/or soil/frost heave. The amount of movement will be related to the compactive effort used when the fill soils are placed and future wetting of the subgrade soils. The potential for damage would be greatest where exterior slabs are constructed adjacent to the building or other structural elements. To reduce the potential for damage, we recommend: • exterior slabs in critical areas be supported on a zone of recompacted soils. • Supporting of flatwork at building entrances and other critical areas on haunches attached by the building foundations. • placement of effective control joints on relatively close centers and isolation joints between slabs and other structural elements. • provision for adequate drainage in areas adjoining the slabs. • use of designs which allow vertical movement between the exterior slabs and adjoining structural elements. • Underground Utility Systems: All underground piping within or near the proposed structure should be designed with flexible couplings, so minor deviations in alignment do not result in breakage or distress. Utility knockouts in foundation walls should be oversized to accommodate differential movements. It is strongly recommended that a representative of the geotechnical engineer provide full-time observation and compaction testing of trench backfill within building and pavement areas. • Concrete Corrosion Protection: Testing of select samples of the soils that will likely be in contact with site concrete for the presence of water-soluble sulfates indicated negligible concentrations. ACI rates the measured concentrations as being a negligible risk of concrete sulfate attack. However, for additional protection from concrete sulfate attack, we recommend the use of ASTM Type II Portland cement (or equivalent) for all concrete on and below grade. Project concrete should be 12 Geotechnical Engineering Report Proposed Residential Additions — 4541 Reed Street, Wheat Ridge, CO CGG Project No. 17.22.118 designed for moderate sulfate risk in accordance with the provisions of Section 318, Chapter 4, of the ACI Design Manual. GENERAL COMMENTS CGG should be retained to review the final design plans and specifications so comments can be made regarding interpretation and implementation of our geotechnical recommendations in the design and specifications. CGG should also be retained to provide testing and observation during the excavation, grading, foundation and construction phases of the project. DESCRIPTIVE SOIL CLASSIFICATION: Soil classification is based on the Unified Classification System. Coarse Grained Soils have more than 50% of their dry weight retained on a #200 sieve; their principal descriptors are: boulders, cobbles, gravel or sand. Fine Grained Soils have less than 50% of their dry weight retained on a #200 sieve; they are principally described as clays if they are plastic, and silts if they are slightly plastic or non -plastic. Major constituents may be added as modifiers and minor constituents may be added according to the relative proportions based on grain size. In addition to gradation, coarse-grained soils are defined on the basis of their in-place relative density and fine-grained soils on the basis of their consistency. The sediments may be composed of particles or pre-existing rocks derived by mechanical weathering, evaporation or by chemical or organic origin. The sediments are usually indurated by cementation or compaction. Chert Very fine-grained siliceous rock composed of micro -crystalline or cyrptocrystalline quartz, chalcedony or opal. Chert is various colored, porous to dense, hard and has a conchoidal to splintery fracture. Claystone Fine-grained rock composed of or derived by erosion of silts and clays or any rock containing clay. Soft massive and may contain carbonate minerals. Conglomerate Rock consisting of a considerable amount of rounded gravel, sand and cobbles with or without interstitial or cementing material. The cementing or interstitial material may be quartz, opal, calcite, dolomite, clay, iron oxides or other materials. Dolomite A fine-grained carbonate rock consisting of the mineral dolomite [CaMg(CO3)21- May contain noncarbonate impurities such as quartz, chert, clay minerals, organic matter, gypsum and sulfides. Reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCL). Limestone A fine-grained carbonate rock consisting of the mineral calcite (CaCO3). May contain noncarbonate impurities such as quartz, chert, clay minerals, organic matter, gypsum and sulfides. Reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCL). Sandstone Rock consisting of particles of sand with or without interstitial and cementing materials. The cementing or interstitial material may be quartz, opal, calcite, dolomite, clay, iron oxides or other material. Shale Fine-grained rock composed of or derived by erosion of silts and clays or any rock containing clay. Shale is hard, platy, of fissile may be gray, black, reddish or green and may contain some carbonate minerals (calcareous shale). Siltstone Fine grained rock composed of or derived by erosion of silts or rock containing silt. Siltstones consist predominantly of silt sized particles (0.0625 to 0.002 mm in diameter) and are intermediate rocks between claystones and sandstones and may contain carbonate minerals. ROCK CLASSIFICATION (Based on ASTM C-294) Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic rocks form from igneous, sedimentary, or pre-existing metamorphic rocks in response to changes in chemical and physical conditions occurring within the earth's crust after formation of the original rock. The changes may be textural, structural, or mineralogic and may be accompanied by changes in chemical composition. The rocks are dense and may be massive but are more frequently foliated (laminated or layered) and tend to break into platy particles. The mineral composition is very variable depending in part on the degree of metamorphism and in part on the composition of the original rock. Marble A recrystallized medium- to coarse-grained carbonate rock composed of calcite or dolomite, or calcite and dolomite. The original impurities are present in the form of new minerals, such as micas, amphiboles, pyroxenes, and graphite. Metaquartzite A granular rock consisting essentially of recrystallized quartz. Its strength and resistance to weathering derive from the interlocking of the quartz grains. Slate A fine-grained metamorphic rock that is distinctly laminated and tends to split into thin parallel layers. The mineral composition usually cannot be determined with the unaided eye. Schist A highly layered rock tending to split into nearly parallel planes (schistose) in which the grain is coarse enough to permit identification of the principal minerals. Schists are subdivided into varieties on the basis of the most prominent mineral present in addition to quartz or to quartz and feldspars; for instance, mica schist. Greenschist is a green schistose rock whose color is due to abundance of one or more of the green minerals, chlorite or amphibole, and is commonly derived from altered volcanic rock. Gneiss One of the most common metamorphic rocks, usually formed from igneous or sedimentary rocks by a higher degree of metamorphism than the schists. It is characterized by a layered or foliated structure resulting from approximately parallel lenses and bands of platy minerals, usually micas or prisms, usually amphiboles, and of granular minerals, usually quartz and feldspars. All intermediate varieties between gneiss and schist and between gneiss and granite are often found in the same areas in which well-defined gneisses occur. ROCK CLASSIFICATION (Based on ASTM C-294) Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are formed by cooling from a molten rock mass (magma). Igneous rocks are divided into two classes (1) plutonic, or intrusive, that have cooled slowly within the earth; and (2) volcanic, or extrusive, that formed from quickly cooled lavas. Plutonic rocks have grain sizes greater than approximately 1 mm, and are classified as coarse- or medium -grained. Volcanic rocks have grain sizes less than approximately 1 mm, and are classified as fine-grained. Volcanic rocks frequently contain glass. Both plutonic and volcanic rocks may consist of porphyries that are characterized by the presence of large mineral grains in a fine-grained or glassy groundmass. This is the result of sharp changes in rate of cooling or other physico-chemical conditions during solidification of the melt. Granite Granite is a medium- to coarse-grained light-colored rock characterized by the presence of potassium feldspar with lesser amounts of plagioclase feldspars and quartz. The characteristic potassium feldspars are othoclase or microcline, or both; the common plagioclase feldspars are albite and oligoclase. Feldspars are more abundant than quartz. Dark -colored mica (biotite) is usually present, and light-colored mica (muscovite) is frequently present. Other dark -colored ferromagnesian minerals, especially honblende, may be present in amounts less than those of the light-colored constituents. Quartz-Monzonite Rocks similar to granite but contain more plagioclase feldspar than potassium and Grano -Diorite feldspar. Basalt Fine-grained extrusive equivalent of gabbro and diabase. When basalt contains natural glass, the glass is generally lower in silica content than that of the lighter - colored extrusive rocks.
