Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) is required on the entire roof when spaced or board sheathing with ANY gap exceeding one half inch exists. Sheathing and mid -roofs may be called in at the same time, one hundred percent of the sheathing must be complete and 25-75 percent of the mid -roof may be complete. Asphalt shingles are required to be fastened to the roof deck with a minimum of 6 nails per shingle. Ice and water shield is required. Eave and rake metal is required. To span that distance you would have to size your ceiling joist a minimum of X ceiling joists. Beyond a 2 x 10 it would need to be engineered as it would fall outside of the prescriptive methods of the International Residential Code. s for the 2x8 rafters@ 24 inches on center, the proposed span is 12 feet, which is fine, but you're limited to certain species and grades. Which are Douglas Fir Larch SS, #1 or #2, Hem Fir #1 or #2, Southern Pine SS, #1 or #2, and Southern Pine -fir SS, #1 or #2. So be sure you can order those species and grades from a local supplier.
