to be installed in every sleeping room, in hallways outside of sleeping rooms, and on every
level of the structure.

2. This. permit shall expire 365 days after the date of issuance regardless of activity. Requests for extension must be made in writing and
received prior to the date of expiration. An extension of no more than 180 days made be granted at the discretion of the Chief Building
Official and maybe subject to a fee equal to one-half of the originalpermit fee.

Effective December 1, 2014, asphalt shingle installations require an approved midroof
inspection, conducted when 25-75 percent of the roof covering is installed, prior to final
approval. Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) is required on the entire roof
when spaced or board sheathing with ANY gap exceeding one half inch exists. Sheathing and
mid -roofs may be called in at the same time, one hundred percent of the sheathing must be
complete and 25-75 percent of the mid -roof may be complete. Asphalt shingles are required
to be fastened to the roof deck with a minimum of 6 nails per shingle. Ice and water shield
is required. Eave and rake metal is required. A ladder extending 3 feet above the roof eave
and secured in place is required to be provided for all roof inspections. Roof ventilation
is required to comply with applicable codes and/or manufacturer installation instructions,
whichever is more stringent. In order to pass a final inspection of elastomeric or similar
type roof coverings, a letter of inspection and approval from the manufacturer technical
representative stating that "the application of the roof at (project address) has been
applied in accordance with the installation instruction for (roof material brand name)
roof covering" is required to be on site at the time of final inspection.
Roof inspections for ROOFS OVER 6/12 PITCH: 3rd party inspection will be required, the 3rd
party inspection report will be collected at final roof inspection performed by City of
Wheat Ridge. If report is not available the final inspection will not be completed.

This application is exclusively for new permits for residential roofs and for licensed
contractors only. This type of permit is ONLY being processed online --do not come
to City Hall to submit an application in person. Permits are processed and issued in
the order they are received and due to the volume of requests, time to process
varies and is subject to change. YOU WILL BE CONTACTED WHEN YOUR
PERMIT IS READY FOR PICK-UP AND WILL BE GIVEN A SPECIFIC DATE
AND TIME WINDOW TO COMPLETE THE TRANSACTION. You will be notified if
your contractor's license or insurance has expired, and you may update those

For all other requests:
Homeowners wishing to obtain a roofing permit must apply for the permit in person
at City Hall. Revisions to existing permits (for example, to add redecking) must be
completed in person at City Hall. All other non -roofing permits must be completed in
person at City Hall. The Building Division will be open from 7:30-10:30 a.m.,
Monday through Friday to process these types of requests.

foundation walls should be only lightly compacted by hand equipment to
about 85 percent of standard Proctor density at optimum moisture content.
While low densiries are desirable to lessen lateral pressures on walls, if they
are too low the backfill may settle after construction. Therefore, the desired
density is the lowest density needed to prevent setflement of the backfill after
construction. Assuming that swelling of the backfill is not a factor, we
recommend that foundation walls supporting backfill composed of the
natural clayey materials be designed to withstand an equivalent lateral fluid
pressure of at least 100 pcf. If swelling of the backfill becomes a factor,
extremely high pressures can result which equal the swelling pressure of the
material.
FOUNDATION REINFORCING
All foundation grade beams must be well reinforced in accordance with the
structural requirements. Refer to the foundation design prepared by the
structural engineer.
FLOOR CONSTRUCTION
As previously noted, the shallow underlaying claystone bedrock at the site
has a high swelling potential. Since it is not possible to concentrate enough
dead load on floor slabs to counteract the developed swelling pressures of
underlaying expansive materials, we anticzpate that any floors constructed as
slabs-on-grade on the natural materials at the site may experience post
construction heaving and cracking upon wetting of the subsoils. We estimate
that the post construction slab uplift could be as great as 3 inches, or more.
The owners should determine if they are willing to tolerate the amount of
slab heave that could occur at the site. It is our opinion that the projected slab
heave will be intolerable for all floors of the proposed structure, except
possibly for the garage. If some residential areas are to remain unfinished, the
owners might be willing to accept slab heaving in these areas. However, we
recommend that living areas with slab-on-grade floors not be finished unless
the occupants and owners fully understand the implications and understand
the options which can be used to eliminate or minimize the heaving of floors
placed in those locations.
If the owners wish to eliminate the possibility of floor heaving, then the only
reliable solution to our knowledge is the construction of a structural floor

with an air space below the floor. We strongly recommend that all areas
which will be finished presently or in the future have a structurally
supported floor system. Likewise, unfinished areas should have a structural
floor unless the owners are willing to accept movement and cracking in the
floor.
If the owners do not utilize a structurally supported floor system over an air
space but construct slabs bearing on subgrade materials, we recommend that
special measures be considered to reduce the amount of total and differenrial
slab heave that may otherwise occur. One method of accomplishing this is to
remove at least 4 feet of the underlaying expansive materials from all
locations where slabs will be placed and to replace these materials with an
equal thickness of suitable, non expansive, relatively impervious fill
materials which are adequately compacted in 8-inch lifts to from 90 to 92
percent of standard Proctor density at optimum to oprimum plus 1 percent
moisture content.
All floor slabs constructed above soil materials and under conditions where
some uplift could occur after construction must utilize the following details
and precautions. While these details will not necessarily prevent slab
movements, they will help prevent the slab movements that do occur from
affecting either the foundations or the superstructures of the building.
1. Separate the slabs from all bearing members and utility lines to
allow their independent movement--construct "floating" slabs.
Provide positive control joints at the juncrion of the slabs with
foundation walls, and provide frictionless sleeves for all
columns and utility lines which pass through slabs.
2. Joints should be scored in the slabs at maximum 200-square foot
areas.
3. If hot-water heat is used, the piping should not be placed beneath
the concrete slab. If a forced-air furnace is used, a minimum 4-
inch collapsible connection should be provided between the
fumace and the heat ducts. Provide flexible connections for all
slab bearing mechanical equipment to allow for at least 4 inches
of vertical movement.
4. Construct a minimum 4-inch void space above or below all
partitions located immediately above concrete slabs-on-grade.

5. If any cohesive materials present at slab level(s) are relatively dry
and sriff at the time of construction, they should be scarified for
the entire depth of drying or for at least 8 inches, whichever is
greater, and they should then be recompacted with the addition
of moisture to about 85 percent of standard Proctor density at
optimum to optimum plus 1 percent moisture content.
In addirion, good backfill and surface drainage should be provided, and lawn
irrigation minimized, as discussed later in this report.
BACKFILL AND SURFACE DRAINAGE
Due to the fact that expansive materials will heave only in the event that they
experience an increase in their moisture content, the foundation soils should
be prevented from being wetted after construction. This can generally be
assisted by using a low permeability backfill and by compacting the backfill
sufficiently so that it does not settle following construction. The backfill
should be free of debris and should be moistened and compacted taking into
account the considerations described in the previous section on lateral earth
pressures. Sufficient water should be added to the backfill to permit proper
compaction; however, the backfill should not be puddled. If compaction is
not feasible, a berm may be constructed adjacent to the foundation walls to
allow for a good slope away from the building even if some settlement
should occur.
If any settlement should occur in the backfill, it could adversely affect utility
lines which transmit fluids and pass through the grade beam foundation
walls. It is not uncommon for such piping to shear at the foundation wails
due to movements in the backfill. It is recommended that the pipes pass
through slotted openings in the foundation walls or that flexible connections
be used to compensate for shifting of the foundarion wall backfill. It is also
recommended that all water lines be carefully pressure tested prior to final
acceptance and that any leaks detected be repaired.
The final grade should be sloped well away from the structure on all sides. A
minimum slope of 12 inches in the first 10 feet is recommended. All
downspouts shouid discharge into extensions which slope away from the
foundation walls and extend beyond the limits of all backfill. The point of
discharge should be at least 7 feet from the foundation walls and good
drainage should be maintained at this point.
