Tim, This Project Summary Letter is in reference to the Structural Calculation Packet for the new SnapNrack Residential Racking System dated December 15, 2008.. The calculations have been performed in accordance to the 2006 International Building Code (IBC) which is the governing structural code in Colorado. Several factors contained within this code govern the overall design of the racking system which has been designed (under certain conditions to be discussed later) to withstand forces due to the racking systems own weight, the weight of the solar panels, and wind forces which may induce both compressive and uplift forces on the panels and the racking system. In terms of variable conditions for the racking system, the main rails which support the solar panels (referred to as the "rail standard") have an adjustable length, which is the distance between where they are attached to the roof (called standoffs). For the purpose of the calculation packet, that length was taken to be 8'-0", V-0", or 4'-0". Based on the many variables that are required to take into account during a wind analysis, we have come up with 50 possible cases that we feel are the most common. These cases are based on a number of factors which include building height, pitch of the panels, wind exposure region, and topographic factor. We have found that the rails will be able to span a maximum of 8'-0" for most of the common cases, but that there are certain cases that will require shorter spans and/or a location sensitive analysis to be performed on a case by case basis if it is found that the location of the solar panel install falls within one of the following criteria: is The total pitch of the solar panel (solar panel pitch & roof pitch) is greater than 45 degrees above the horizontal. • A topographic factor applies to the location. Topographic factors apply, for general purposes, when the construction area is on, or near the top of a hill or mesa, on the edge of a bluff, or overlooking a large body of water. For the exact definition of what a topographic factor is, please see ASCE 7-05, section 6.5.7. • The roof of the structure that the solar panels will be installed on is taller than 40 ft. above the natural grade. Due to the possibility of structural failure of the rails from their non-symmetrical shape, testing was conducted per the standards set forth by the 2006 IBC Section 1714: Preconstruction Load Tests. The results of this testing procedure were used to compare with the calculated values to find the maximum load allowed by the rails. The full procedure and results of these tests can be found in this packet. Also contained within the calculation packet are calculations for the connection of the rails to the roof rafters. Using the sizes provided by AEE, we have calculated the maximum forces that will be resisted based on the withdraw value of the lag screws, and the aluminum components which are involved in transferring these forces from the rail to the roof rafters. The results from this have been integrated into this report and can be found in the summary charts (attached). The attached pages of this summary contains what we feel are some of the most common building configurations with varying wind speeds. These charts can be used as a quick reference for looking up maximum rail span lengths based on the building conditions, but it is to be noted that for any building where a topographic factor is to be applied (tops of hills, mesas, or coastal bluffs) the rail span lengths given are only educated guesses for the given site condition. A structural engineer should calculate the exact topographic factor for this specific site prior to construction. In addition, the "Tilt Kit" option of mounting the panels to the rails as shown in AEE's drawings "Res- Tiltl" and "Res-Tilt2" (dated 12/15/08) has been analyzed and is a structurally acceptable option for mounting the solar panels to the existing residential roof. This statement is made under the condition that the rail span guidelines given within this packet are followed. AEE Solar has also developed a "Universal End Clamp" which is used to connect the individual solar panels to the rails (see AEE Solar's drawing "UEC-1" dated 12/15/08). These have been developed and tested by AEE Solar and are more than adequate to resist the maximum uplift and shear forces generated by the wind when installed as specified. Please note that all sizes, material specifications, and weights have been provided by AEE Solar. All waterproofing issues involved in connecting the racking system to the roof are the responsibility of AEE Solar. Specifically, an addition to be constructed above the existing garage to be used as a storage area. The entire str►icture is constructed of precast concrete panels on a drilled pier foundation system. The roof is supported by steel bar joist trusses. There is no baseinent but a crawl space under the main floor. The concrete panels are connected to each adjacent panel by xneans of embedde.d steel plales welded together. An engiueeriug analysis was performcd to dctcrmine if the existing garage ctnicture has sufficient structural strength and stability to safely support the new upper ]evel addition. The new garage upper level addition is tn he used for storage; tlie Uniform Building Code requires storage area floor loadings are to be 125 psf. Although this seems excessive for a resideiitial setting, the analysis was inade using this figurc. ANALYSIS Foundation: Using Geoteclmical data from the original construction, analysis shows the existin}; drilled piers to be capable of supporting 90,000 pottnds vertical per picr. Tliis is £ar in axcess of the 46,000 pounds maximuin loading from Yhe new addition including the existing structure in this area. Walls: The existing garage walls are constn►cted of reinforced concrete using 400 psi concrete and 60,000 psi strength reinforcing steel. Tlie new storage floor will be supported from the east and wesc garage walls usiiig tlie existing roof trusses and additional trusses. Old Roof / New Siora ~e ArG~ a Flvor; The old garage ronf is supported by Vulcraft 14H4 bar joists spanning from wall to wall approximately 24 feet and are spaced 5 feeC on centers. This joist can support 285 pounds per lineal foot. At the present spacing, Ll►e 125 psf floor load wiJl overload these joists. Therefore it will he necessary to add anore joists between the existing ones so that tlie joist spacing will be 1 foot 8 inches center to center. The new joists will be 14K4 VYileratt. A 4 x 4 x'/4 angle bracket with 2- 5/8 inch diainctcr expnnsion anchor bolts will suPpnrt the end of the joists. New Roof: A new pitclied roof will be installed over the storage area. Tl,e ridge beam is to be a 5 1/8 x 18 inch Glulam grade 24F-V4, the rafters will be 2 x lOs on 24 ineh centers.
