Fax 11~70 Fax tt Subject; Geotechnical Engineering Observation and Evaluation, Foundation Modification to Existing Health South Facility, 7777 West 38'h Avenue, Wheat Ridge, Colorado Project No. 04-1-135 Dear Mr. Crocker: This letter presents the results of a geotechnical engineering observation and evaluation for proppsed foundation modifications to an Existing Health South Facility located at 7777 West 38"' Avenue in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Thts work included nBservation of an excavation adjacent to an existing footing for the above referenced project and performing laboratory testing ofi a sample obtained from the excavation to aid in evaluating the foundation modification options. The study was performed in general accordance with the se0pe of worlc in our Proposal No. P-04-202 to Boutder Associates ArchiYects datad February 26, 2004. This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained during this study, and to present our conclusions and recommendations based on the planned cohstruction and the near surface materials exposed in the excavation adjacent to the existing foundation, A discusslon of geotechnical engineering recommend&tions for foundation modification options is included in the report. Backaround: Art indoor pooi (spa) extansion is planned; the exis'king pool is housed in a pre-engineered steel framed building for Health South. To aecommodate the lengthoned po01, a portion of the floor slab has been ramoved from the building. Steel reinforaing tensien tles ara embedded within the qoncreta floor ofi the existing building fio resist lateral forces and overturning mament at the bases of the columns along the outer walls of the building. Ties wiil have to be cut to accommodate the pool extension. The existing column foundations will be modified to resi6t lateral fotces and overEurning moments at the bases of the building columns. The mod(fication altematives being considered include constructing a footing extansion with cpunterforts, placing a mass ofi cementitious flowable fill on the exterior of the foundatian wali, and installing Yie anchors though the exis#ing foundation wali at an angle and embedded befow the bottom of the pool (spa). The projecc sYructural engineer estimates that the required load of an anchor instalied at 30 degrees with respec'C to horizpntal wfll be approximaCefy 15 kiPs. _'-•_'I`IO.'(`JFi---#'. The column in this area of the building is supported by a shallow spread footing Yhat is appraximataly 8 inches thiclc and extends 12 inehes outsida the foundatlon wall. The foundation wall is approximately 30 inches hieh. Thls exisCing Column and a column loCated along the sputheast Wall of the building, locatad near an existing conference ronm, will be afifepted when tfes in the slab are cut for the pooi (spa) extension. An excava'tion was nqt performed adjacent to the column footing located along the southeast wall of the 6uilding, since it was located near the maln enCrance of the building. Ma'[erial a't the base of the excavatien adjaaent to the existing footing was eqilected for material' classification and laboratory testing. Laboratory tests performed on a sample obtained from the excavation adjacent to the footing included natural molsture content, gradation and Atterbarg Limlts tests, Each test was performed in general aCCOrdance with applicable ASTM Procedures. The laboratory test resul'ts are presented on Fig. 1 and are sUmmarized in Tahle l, The near-surface conditians encountered in the base of the excavation adjacent ta the buiiding footing generally consisted of clayey sand. Ground water was not encountered in the open axcavation. Foundation Extenslons with CounterForts The lateral resistance of a sproad footing with or without a counterPort bearing on clayey sands will be a combination of the sliding resistance of the footing on the bearing materiai and passive earth pressure against the &ide of the footing and/or counYerfort. Resistance to sliding 8t the bottom of the footing andlor Counterfort can be caiculated based on an allowable coefficient of friction of 0.30 for the clayey sand material. Fassive pressure against the sides of the footings, foundation wall and/or counterfort can be calculated using an equivalent fluid unit weight of 175 pcf for compacted native clayey sands. The equivalent fluid unit weight for passive pressure resistance against the founda#ion can he increased to 226 pef if CDOT Class 1 Structure BaCkfill is placed against the foqting, foundation wall and/or counterfort, We recommend Yhat the zone of compacted fili providing passive prassure resisxance extend a dlstance beyond the building wall equal to 2 timas the footing embedment depth. Compacted fill placed against the sides of the footings and countepforts to resist lateral loads should be a nonexpansive material, Fill should be placed and compacted to at leasi 95% of the maximum standard Proctot dry density at a moisRU1'2 content within 2 percentage points of the optimum moimre content. Kumar & Assoeiates, Inc. „•-1 1 1 wnnrc « r,a~U~iHitS N0.798~-- -P.3-._ Health South Corporation March 12, 2004 Page 3 Anchor Desian Recommendations• We recommend that an anchor system cortsisting of permanent, hammer-driven tllachanicai anchors constructed of galvaniaed ductile iron (Manta Ray Anchors or appraved equal) be used to laterally support the cotumns of the existing building. Two anchors per cotumn can 6e installad through eircufar holes cut through the foUndation wall of the building and driven intp the soils below the floor slab of the building. We recommend that anchors have a dasign capaaity of 7.5 kips with respect to anchor pullout. The design Capacity shquld include a factor of safety of 2.0 with respect to the ultimate puilout capacity, which should be ver'rfied through field proof testing as discussed balow. Ths struCturai engineer should analyze the eXisting foundatiqn wall to determine if the Wail is capable of resisting a lateral load of 200 percent of the design capacity. If the foundation wall is not capable of supporting this high of a capacity, multiple (ower capacity anchors will probabiy 6e required, The anchora should be oriented 301 to 50° from horizontal, the tip of the anchor should bear 4 feet below the floor slab, and should axtend at least 6 faet behind the foundation wali when the anchor is tully engaged end sat (after tensionin8). The anchor should have a minimum tendon tensiie strength af 16 kfps (Manta Ray MR-1 or approved equal) to allow for proof tasting to 2000/a of the design pullout capacity as diSCUSSed 6elow. The faceplate, anchor nu# and other facing assembly Units for the anchor should consist of galvanized, corrosion resistant material simifar to the anchor. A representative of the geotechnica) engineer should obsenre all anchor instailations. As noted above, the anchors should be proof tasted 200% of the design pullout CesistanCe. Wowever, if the existing foundation wall starts to show distress or the foundation wafl sfiarts to laterally move, the test should be diseontinued immediately and the geotechnicAl engineer and struatural enginaer should be contected. A representatlve of tha gefltechnical engineer should be no'tified to observa proof testing. Whara the test results indieate a failure of the anchor in pullout, a higher-capacity meehanical anchor may be required. Desion And Construction Supqort Servioes: Kumar & Associates, InC. shoUld be ratained to review the projeCt plans and specifications for conformance with tha recommendations provided in our report. All concrete shall have a minimum 28 day compressive strength of 3000 psi. It shall be the owners or agents responsibility to have the proper mix design delivered to the site and not allow the addition of water to increase the slump beyond limit stated below. It shall be the owners or agents responsibility to take concrete test cylinders, if required. Fresh concrete shall be protected from freezing during cold weather. 2. Water may be added to the concrete mix at the job site, but maximum allowable slump of 3 inches shall not be exceeded. 3. All reinforcing steel shall be ASTM intermediate grade. 4. All splices in reinforcing steel shall be a minimum of I1-611. 5. All soft material or spongy soil under the footings shall be removed and repiaced with sand and gravel (or 3/4 inch road base material) and compacted to 95% of relative density at optimum moisture 6. All footings shall be founded on undisturbed, consolidated material. Fill material under footings shall be compacted to 95% of relative density at optimum moisture. 7. Dimensions are assumed from plans furnished. Check with owner prior to foundation layout. 8. Finish grading shall slope away from the foundation a minimum of 12 inches in 10 feet. 9. A perimeter drain is required on all exterior footings and foundation walls. Drain line shall slope to natural grade or sump. 10. The footing and/or foundation wall shall be inspected by the County Building Inspector and the Design Engineer after placement of reinforcing steel and before placing concrete. 11. All construction shall conform with the current issue of the Uniform Building Code and Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete, American Concrete Institute Publication ACI 318. NOTE: The above described tract is approved for a standard continuous spread footing for a two story building. Details shown were concluded from examination of the soil profile excavation within the area of the proposed footing.
