The existing exterior walls consist of 4 inch wide CMU (concrete masonry units) with a ' brick veneer exterior. The house was built in 1949 and a second floor was added to approximately 55% of the house in 1951. The proposed addition would extend the second floor over the remaining 45 % of the house. Based upon the fact that the existing wails have supported a second floor addition for over 50 years without causing structural damage to the existing structure is an indication that it would be reasonable to assume that extending a similar second floor addition would be acceptable. I have also looked at the loading being imposed by the second floor addition and compared it to the compression values from a table of "Allowable working Stresses in Unreinforced Unit Masonry". The magnitude of the loading being imposed is well below the allowable loading. Based on these criteria the proposed addition should be , acceptable. David C.
