SCOPE
This report presents the results of a soils and foundation investigation for a proposed barn at
11721 West 52"d Avenue, which is in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The purpose of our investigation was to
evaluate subsurface conditions. The report presents a description of subsurface conditions encountered
at the site, recommended toundation system, and design and constniction criteria inilucnced by the soiis.
The report is based on data developed during the field and laboratory investigations and our experience.
A summary of our findings and recommendations is presented below.
CONCLUSIONS
l. Subsurface materials encountered consisted of 3 feet of stitF, sandy clay overlying dense,
silty, gravelly sand to 17 feet in Test Hole I and a practical drilling rig refusal depth of 15S feet
in Test Hole 2. Underlying the sand in Test Hole 1, hard, silty claystone bedrock was
encountered to the maximum explored depth of20 feet.
A sample of sandy clay indicated a low expansion potential when wetted under a pressure of
1000 pounds per square foot at the tested moisture and density. The sand is believed to be non-
expansive because of the low percentage of fine-gained material.
2. During drilling, free water was encountered at 8 feet in Test Hole ] and 9 feet in Test Hole 2.
Additionally, both borings caved to approximately 9 to 10 feet immediately after drilling. The
borings were checked five days after drilling and ground water was measured at 6 feet in Test
Hole 1 and Test Hole 2 was dry and had caved to 9 feet.
3. The barn can be constnucted with a drilled footing or spread footing foundation system
bearing on native, silty sand. A footing foundation system will have a low risk ot' movement.
Design and construction criteria are presented in the body ofthe report.
4. Positive drainage down and away from all foundation walls shouid be established and
maintained at all times.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A single-story, pole barn is proposed at the location presented on Figure l. The L-shaped metal
building will be approximately 224 feet long and 51 feet wide. The proposed support pole spacing is
approximately 8 feet. An approximate load of 7,500 pounds per pole is anticipated and approximately
6,000 pounds ot' loading will be due to snow loads. The building area has gentle slope in the lono,
Job No. 12093
Page 2
dimension and approximately 3 feet of cut will occur at the north end of the structure and 3 feet of fill
will be placed at the southern end. Slab-on-grade construction is not proposed, and the floor of the barn
will consist of soil and road base material. Below grade construction is not planned. Detailed building
plans were not available when this report was prepazed and an approximate foundation depth of 3 feet
was assumed.
SITE CONDITIONS
'fhe sitc is located in an rural-residential area in Wheat Ridge. The site is located at die northeast
end of the West 52"d Street dead end. An existing residence and garage is located in the southeast
portion ofthe lot at the location presented on Figure 1. The existing residence is a brick and wood frame
structure with a spread footing foundation and structural distress was not observed on the exterior of the
residence. Existing concrete slab-on-grade constnaction appears to have performed satisfactorily. The
slope in the proposed building is approximately 2 percent towards the south. The southern quarter of the
building area consists of landscape boulder storage and the remaining building area has a good cover of
native gass.
INVESTIGATION
Subsurface conditions were investigated by drilling two exploratory borings at the locations
presented on Figure l. The borings were advanced using a 4-inch diameter continuous flight auger
powered by a CME-45 drilling rig. Sampling was attempted at 5- or 10-foot intervals using a Califomia
sampler, which was driven into the soil by dropping a 140-pound hammer through a free fall of 30
inches. The California sampler is a 2.5-inch outside diameter by 2.0-inch inside diameter sampling
device. The number of blows required to drive the sampler into the soil is known as a penetration test.
The number of blows required for the sampler to penetrate 12 inches can be evaluated and gives an
indication of the consistency or relative density of the soils and bedrock. The gravelly sand soil limited

the quality of the recovered samples. The results of the penetration tests and logs of the soiis
encountered are presented on the Logs of Exploratory Borings, Figure 2. Samples were returned to the
laboratory where they were visually classified and appropriate testing was assigned to evaluate the
engineering properties of the soiL Laboratory testing consisted of one sweli-consolidation test, three
moisture and density determinations, and three grain-size gradation analyses. The results of the
laboratory testing aze presented on Figures 2 and 3.
SUI3SURFACE CONDITIONS
Test Hole 1 was approximately 3 feet lower in elevation than Test Hole 2. Subsurface materials
encountered consisted of 3 feet of stiff, sandy clay overlying dense, silty, gravelly sand to 17 feet in
Test Hole 1 and a practical drilling rig refusal depth of 15.5 feet in Test Hole 2. Underlying the sand
in Test Hole l, hard, silty claystone bedrock was encountered to the maximum explored depth of 20
feet. Additional subsurface details are presented on Figure 2.
Swell-consolidation test results for a sample of sandy clay from 1 foot in Test Hole indicated a
low expansion potential when wetted under a pressure of 1000 pounds per square foot (PSF). The sand
is believed to be non-expansive because of the low percentage of fine-grained material.
During drilling, free water was encountered at 8 feet in Test Hole 1 and 9 feet in Test Hole 2.
Additionally, both borings caved to approximately 9 to 10 feet immediately after drilling. The borings
were checked five days after drilling and ground water was measured at 6 feet in Test Hole 1 and Test
Hole 2 was dry and had caved to 9 feet. Details regarding ground water depths and test hole cave are
presented on Figure 2. Seasonaily higher ground water levels resulting from perched water on the
claystone may occur during wet periods.

' BUILDING FOUNDATIONS
The soils at the proposed foundation elevations consist of siity, gravelly sand. The overlying
sandy clay exhibited a low swell potential and where fill will be placed foundations should be deepened
to the sand to reduce the risk for dift'erential movement. The bam can be constructed with a spread
footing foundation system. However, we understand that a drilled footing foundation (short caisson) is
desired to resist loading from wind. The drilled footings should be bottomed on native, silty, gaveily
sand and be designed for a maximum allowable soil bearing pressure of 3000 PSF. Footings on the
southern end will likely be installed 2 to 3 feet deeper (up to 6 feet below final grade) so as to beaz on
undisturbed, native sand. The drilled footing foundation system should be designed and constructed to
meet the following criteria.
1. All footings must be supported by undisturbed, native soil. Soils loosened by the drilling or
forming process should be removed from the footing areas prior to placing concrete. We
recommend the observation of drilled footing excavations to confirm footings are supported by
suitable material. It may be difficult to prevent cave of the granular soils after drilling,
particularly if ground water is encountered. Casing should be available to minimize hole cave
and ground water infiltration. Concrete should not be placed in more than 3 inches of water and
tremie placement ofconcrete may be necessary.
2. We recommend a minimum footing diameter of at least 24 inches for bearing capacity
requirements. Larger sizes may be necessary depending on the load ofthe structure.
3. lf continuous foundation walls are used, the walls should be reinforced to span local
anomalies in the subsoil. We recommend a minimum reinforcement of'at least two, No. 5 grade
60 bars top and bottom in all foundation walls. Walis should be reinforced to span an
unsupported IenbRh of ] 0 feet.
4. The footings be protected from frost action and the bearing capacity is dependent on the depth
of embedment for rootings. Footings should be covered with a minimum of 4 teet of soil for
frost protection and bearing capacity requirements.
LATERAL LOADS
The foundations will need to resist lateral loads from winds. At the northern portion of the
building, it is assumed that drilled footing foundations will be constructed in silty, gravelly sand. ln the
ticoiccuwcai urvcsugauon
Job No. 12093
Pagc i
middle and southern portions of the building, the upper 3 to 6 feet of drilled footings will be constructed
in clayey soil and fill. If additional resistance to wind loading is required, a grade beam can be
excavated into the soil. A"passive" equivalent fluid pressure of 300 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) can be
used for the sandy clay and. For fill soil, a"passive" equivalent fluid pressure of ] 50 PCF is
recommended and a"passive" equivalent iluid pressure of 500 PCF can be used for the silty sand. For
"active" conditions, the foundations should be designed for an equivalent fluid pressure of 45.(PCF).
These loads do not include hydrostatic loads or surcharge loads such as sloping backfill or vehicles. To
maintain passive resistance in the soi1, the start of the fill slope away from the structure should be a
minimum of 5 feet from the building.
SITE DEVELOPMENT
The proposed barn will be benched into a gentle slope and fill will be placed at the southern end
to level the building pad. Foundations should be deepened ro native ganular soil. Fill should be
compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of standazd Proctor density as determined by ASTM D698
within 2 percent of optimum moisture content. Coarse-grained fragments larger than 3 inches should be
excluded from fill. Fill slopes should have a maximum slope of 3 to 1(horizontal to vertical).
DRAINAGE
Below grade finished space or retaining walls are not proposed. lf information regarding
subsurface drainage is needed, our office should be contacted. The risk for wetting of foundation soils
can be reduced by carefully planned and maintained surface drainaae. The foliowing precautions should
be observed during construction and be maintained at ail times after the structure is completed.
1. Excessive wetting or drying of open foundation excavations should be avoided as much as
possible during construction.
Geotechnical 1 nvest i gat ion
Job No. 12093

2. Backfill at foundation walls should be moistened and compacted. Any settlement of backfill
after completion of the structure should be immediately filled and positive drainage
reestablished.
3. The ground surface surrounding the structure should be sloped to drain away from the
structure in all directions. We recommend a minimum slope of 12 inches in the first 10 feet.
4. Roof downspouts and drains should discharge well beyond the limits of alI backfill. Water
used inside the barn for livestock or equipment washing should collected in an impervious basin
and discharged a minimum of 10 feet from the structure.
5. Plastic membranes should not be used to cover the gound surface immediately.surrounding
the structure. These membranes can trap moisture and prevent normal evaporation from
occumng.
LIMITATIONS
Although the borings were located to obtain a reasonably accurate determination of foundation
conditions, variations in the subsoil conditions are possible. Our firm should be contacted if below grade
or slab-on-grade construction are proposed or if conditions dift'erent from those described are
encountered in the excavations. We recommend excavations be observed by a representative of our
ot£ce.
If we can be of further service in discussing the contents of this report, or in the analysis of the
influence of subsurface conditions on the design ofthe structure, please call.
