Installation of roof sheathing (new or overlay) is required on the entire roof when spaced or board sheathing with ANY gap exceeding one half inch exists. Sheathing and mid -roofs may be called in at the same time, one hundred percent of the sheathing must be complete and 25-75 percent of the mid -roof may be complete. Asphalt shingles are required to be fastened to the roof deck with a minimum of 6 nails per shingle. Ice and water shield is required. Eave and rake metal is required. A ladder extending 3 feet above the roof eave and secured in place is required to be provided for all roof inspections. Roof ventilation is required to comply with applicable codes and/or manufacturer installation instructions, whichever is more stringent. In order to pass a final inspection of elastomeric or similar type roof coverings, a letter of inspection and approval from the manufacturer technical representative stating that "the application of the roof at (project address) has been applied in accordance with the installation instruction for (roof material brand name) roof covering" is required to be on site at the time of final inspection. OtLer- wise, weather may cause them to mst, ]eaving sveaks. * With a pneiunatic nailer, use no more pressure 11ian necessazy to drive nails flush with the surface. * Screws take somewhat longer to drive tlian nails, but they hold boards securely, allow for easier removai, and eliminate unsighfly indentations from hammer blows. ■ To reduce spliaing, drill a pilot hole about ihree quarters the diameter of the nail. For dense or brittle wood, grind sUarpness fiom nails or blum the points by strildng them carefully with a liammer. Blunt nails cut tLrough; sharp ones pry apart. f Use 12d nails on nominal two-inch decking. Use two at each joint with 2 x 4s laid flat; use tlvce for 2 x 6s laid flat. lOd nails are recommended for 5/4" decking. s Lnmber wider than six inches should not be used as a flat surface. Wide, flat boards are subjecl to ponding of raia water, w1ricL can lead to cupping problems. It is better to use two 2 x 6's than one 2 x 12. + If a board is bowed, install it with ihe crown up. Gravity and the weight of people and fiuniture will flatten it. * If a board Las a slight bend to it, it sometimes can be strtightened as it is nailed in place.
