Directlons ~
1. Fill in the blanks on pages 2 and 3 with dimensions
and materials which wil] be used to build the
structure. Please print legibly.
Whether you hire a conUaMOr or build your project yourself, note: treated wood will last a long time, therefore
so will your workiuansMp. You'll be happier - and your project will look better - if you take your time and ob-
serve good construction techniques.
* Before you begin nailing, lay out your lumber with the best-looking face exposed. Decide which pieces
you want for visible areas, and which pieces for underswcture.
' Sepmte deck boards as follows to allow for eapansion and contraction. If heavy and wet, separate boards
no more ihan I/16" as some shrinkage will occur. If Gght and dry, separate boards no more Uan I/8".
* Avoid long spans in construction The greater ihe
distance between supponing points, ihe more force
developed within ihe wood as it dries. Also avoid de-
signs with long cantilevers unsecured at one end.
* Use enough nails. Sldmping doesnY pay. Use two
nails across a 2 x 4 and iluee across a 2 x 6. Drive
nails at a slight angle towazd each other.
• Nails and other hazdware should be ho[dipped
zinccoa[ed or equally well protected material. Other-
wise, weather may cause them to rust, leaving streaks.
* With a pneum3tic nailer, use no more pressure than necessary to drive nails flush with ihe surface.
" Screws take somewhat longer to drive than nails, but they hold boards securely, allow for easier removal,
and eliminate unsighUy indentaUOns from hanuner blows.
• To reduce splitting drill a pilot hole about three quaners the diameter of the nail. For dense or britUe
wood, gind sharpness from nails or blunt ihe poinis by strilang them carefully with a lanmer. Blunt nails wt
through; shazp ones pry apart.
• Use 12d nails on nominal hvo-inch decking. Use two at each joint with 2 x 4s laid flat; use three for 2 x 6s
laid flat. I Od nails are recommended for 5/4" decking.
* Lumber wider than sac inches should no[ be used as a flat surface. Wide, flat boards are subject to ponding
of tain water, which can leal to cupping problems. It is better to use two 2 x 6's than one 2 x 12.
* If a board is bowed, install it with ihe crown up. Graviry and the weigM of people and fiuni[ure will tlatten
it.
; If a board has a slight bend to it, it sometimes can be straightened as it is nailed in place.
