A meeting of the Wheat Ridge City Council called for the purpose
of studying the Jefferson County Major Thoroughfare Plan was called
to order by Mayor Albert E. Anderson at 7:30 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge
City Office at 7390 West 38 Avenue.
Attending were all City Officials, Mr. Robert Kroening of the Jeff-
erson County Planning Department and approximately eighty-five
interested citizens.
Mr. Walt Petit of the Streets, Traffic and Drainage Committee gave
a report on Traffic Signal Maintenance.
He noted that County maintenance would end in June, 1970. Three
companies, Dial Electric, Arc Electric and Colorado Signal Co.
had been contacted and the lowest bid of $8.50 per unit per month
had been submitted by Dial Electric.
The Committee's recommendation was that the City contract with
Dial Electric and that it check the possibilities of a three year
contract.
Mr. Robert Kroening of the Jefferson County Planning Department
discussed the background, placement, advantages and ramifications
of the Major Thoroughfare Plan and more specifically of the Front
Range Freeway which, as proposed, would run through Whe~t Ridge
parallel to Kipling Street from 26 Avenue to 38 Avegue, then to the
NW eventually tying into McCaslin Blvd. in Boulder, Colorado.
Questions were raised regarding the spacing of highways and the
placement of the Front Range Freeway along Kipling Street.
Comments indicated that citizens did not want streets near their
homes widened into four lane highways.
The citizens' comments also were concerned about:
1. A major highway splitting the City in two parts
2. The increase in traffic which might result
3. The location of high speed and/or collector streets near
existing schools
4. A cloverleaf interchange near the high school
5. The fact that Denver plans called for the widening of
streets which deadend in Wheat Ridge.
6. Whether or not there would be limited access
7. Whether or not collector streets would be one way streets
8. The dates traffic counts were taken
It was requested that new traffic counts be taken and that the
City look into rapid transit.
Motion was made by Alderman Pepe and seconded by Alderman Donaldson
"that the matter of the Major Thoroughfare Plan be taken under
advisement for further study." Motion passed 5-1 with Alderman
Hulsey voting "nay."
There was no time limit set.
Council would begin study in
as possible.
However, recommendation was that
order to make a decision as quickly
Meeting was adjourned at 10:30 p.m.
