HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance-1999-1175 CITY OF WHEAT RIDGE, COLORADO INTRODUCED BY COUNCIL MEMBER DiTullio Council Bill No. 30 Ordinance No. 1175 Series of 1999 TITLE: AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING COMPENSATION COUNCIL MEMBERS, THE CITY CLERK AND THE TREASURER. FOR CITY WHEREAS, the Wheat Ridge Home Rule Charter provides that compensation of the City's elected officials must be established by ordinance; and WHEREAS, the Wheat Ridge Home Rule Charter prohibits the Council from increasing or decreasing an elected official's compensation during his term of office, and WHEREAS, at the November 2, 1999, municipal election, new terms of office will begin for four (4) Council members and for the City Clerk and City Treasurer, and WHEREAS, the City Council desires to increase the compensation for these elected officials. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WHEAT RIDGE, COLORADO: Section 1. Compensation for City Council Members. The salaries for those terms of Council members commencing upon the November 2, 1999, municipal election shall be $6,000 per year, Such Council members shall have the option, which must be exercised in writing but not sooner than November 3, 1999, to choose not to receive all or any portion of said compensation. Section 2. Compensation for City Clerk. The salary for the City Clerk, commencing with the term for the Clerk which begins upon the November 2, 1999, municipal election, shall be $33,000 per year. In the event, and only in the event, the voters of the City approve, at the November 2, 1999, municipal election, an amendment to Charter Section 3.7 to provide for a four-year term of office for the City Clerk, the salary of the City Clerk shall be automatically be increased to $37,000 per year effective November 6, 2001. The City Clerk shall have the option, which must be exercised in writing but GED\53027\327668.0 1 not sooner than November 3, 1999, to choose not to receive all or any portion of said compensation. Section 3. Compensation for City Treasurer. The salary for the City Treasurer, commencing with the term for the Treasurer which begins upon the November 2, 1999, municipal election, shall be $33,000 per year. In the event, and only in the event, the voters of the City approve, at the November 2, 1999, Municipal Election, an amendment to Charter Section 3.9 to provide for a four-year term of office for the City Treasurer, the salary of the City Treasurer shall be automatically be increased to $37,000 per year effective November 6, 2001. The City Treasurer shall have the option, which must be exercised in writing but not sooner than November 3, 1999, to choose not to receive all or any portion of said compensation. Section 4. Safety Clause. The City Council hereby finds, determines, and declares that this Ordinance is promulgated under the general police power of the City of Wheat Ridge, that it is promulgated for the health, safety, and welfare of the public and that this Ordinance is necessary for the preservation of health and safety and for the protection of public convenience and welfare. The City Council further determines that the Ordinance bears a rational relation to the proper legislative object sought to be attained. Section 5. Severability: Conflictinq Ordinances Repealed. If any section, subsection or clause of this ordinance shall be deemed to be unconstitutional or otherwise invalid, the validity of the remaining sections, subsections and clauses shall not be affected thereby. All other ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed. Section 6. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take effect fifteen days after final publication, as provided by Section 5.11 of the Charter.
