HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution-1979-0635 INTRODUCED BY COUNCILMEMBER TURNER RESOLUTION NO. 635 Series of 1979 TITLE: RESOLUTION URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THROUGH THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY TO PURCHASE VACANT LAND SURROUNDING THE ROCKY FLATS PLANT FOR SAFETY REASONS AND TO SUPPORT THE RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN ADVOCATED BY THE STATE OF COLORADO. WHEREAS, the Rocky Flats Plant owned by the U. S. Department of Energy and operated by Rockwell International, is situated in Jefferson County, adjacent to Boulder County, approximately 16 air miles from downtown Denver, and WHEREAS, this Plant has been engaged in the manufacture of radioactive and non-radioactive parts since 1952, and WHEREAS, there is an increasing concern of the public about the possibility of unforeseen circumstances which could result in a hazardous release of radioactive material which would be detrimental to the health of persons living in this region, and WHEREAS, a substantial amount of vacant land currently exists for a radius of several miles surrounding the Plant which is in danger of encroach- ment by residential housing and other development. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Wheat Ridge, that the Federal Government through the U. S. Department of Energy be hereby urged to immediately purchase sufficient vacant land surrounding the Rocky Flats Plant to provide a reasonable safety zone in case of a radio- logical incident, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the radiological emergency response plan advocated by the State of Colorado in cooperation with Rockwell International, U. S. Department of Energy, and the surrounding counties, be publicly endorsed and supported, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the local press be asked to cooperate to the fullest extent in informing the general public of the procedures necessary in the event of a radiological incident particularly with respect to "in place protection", and Introduced by Councilmember Resolution No. 635 Sed es of 1979 TURNER Page 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted by the City Clerk of the City of Wheat Ridge to all Congressmen and United States Senators representing this area, and other local officials, i.e. Councilmembers of the Cities of Denver, Arvada, Boulder, Golden, Lakewood, and the Boards of County Commissioners of Jefferson and Boulder Counties, and to the Rocky Flats Monitoring Committee.
