HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution-1979-0639 INTRODUCED BY COUNCILMEMBER TURNER RESOLUTI ON NO. 639 Series of 1979 TITLE: RESOLUTION RELATING TO ADVANCE PUBLIC INFORMATION ON AIR POLLUTION ALERTS BY THE TELEVISION, RADIO AND NEWS MEDIA IN THE DENVER METRO- POLITAN AREA. WHEREAS, the air pollution problem in the Denver Metropolitan Area has become recognized as one of the worst in the nation; and WHEREAS, the health problems posed to the citizens of Wheat Ridge and other inhabitants of the Denver Metropolitan Area from carbon monoxide and other pollutants is a matter of critical concern to this Council and other locally-elected officials; and WHEREAS, the Air Pollution Control Division of the Colorado Depart- ment of Health presently has the ability to predict adverse climate con- ditions likely to result in Air Pollution Alerts for the Denver Area 24 to 30 hours in advance of such conditions; and WHEREAS, advance public information of these predicted Air Pollution Alerts would allow citizens and employers time to reduce vehicle driving and take other precautions necessary for the protection of individual health; and WHEREAS, the Wheat Ridge City Council wishes to elicit the co- operation of the various forms of news media in the Metropolitan Area to inform the public of pending Air Pollution Alerts. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WHEAT RIDGE, COLORADO: Section 1. That it is in the interest of public health and safety that the public be informed as far in advance as possible of a pending poor air quality or of an air pollution alert condition. Section 2. The news media of the Denver Metropolitan Area is here- by urged to cooperate in the distribution of such information as soon as possible after such predictions have been made by the State Health Department. Section 3. That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the major newspapers, television, and radio outlets in the Denver Metro- politan Area.
