Jerman, Ci ty j),dmi ni s trator, Charles Owens, Assistant Citv Attorney, and interested citizens Ken Gish, 3871 Eaton St , representing the Jefferson Articulation District, gave the background history of the Jefferson Area Pe.Sill,{_~l:J.~ck'!1an, Secretary of the I-Iheat Ri dge Arti cui ati on Area Advi sory Group, reported on that area The only school really affected is Fruitdale, Wheat Ridge High School would probably gain about fifty students if the Optional Area were included in Wheat Ridge High School boundaries The concerns of her group are 32nd Ave walkway lengthened, parking at Wheat Ridge High School, intersection at Kipling & 32nd Ave (shoul~ have a left-turn arrow on all four sides, and a no-right-turn on r,'d sign, more Police assistance at that corner when school is let out school crossing guards), and how Wheat Ridge sees the schools as part of City Council responsibility Council responded that they are concerned about how kids get to school, they feel a responsibility for the physical aspects of safety, are interested in the community, in that it remain a pleasant, livable community, concerned that schools are being sold at a nominal price and then building expensive schools later, that younger families are moving back into the older neighborhoods and schools will be needed, that there is no place to walk north from 44th Ave to schools in Arvada Mrs Speckman said that each school's recommendations will be turned in to the School Board Mr Fiasco said that he would like this information before the City Council meetfng-with- the School Board Mr Lewman said that if schools are closed, the Comprehensive Plan ln those areas would have to be looked at Mr Chastain reported that Columbia Heights Elementary School is now only a '~ndergarten through Third Grade and some of the area's children of that age who have older siblings go to Lumberg The area would like to see Columbia Heights returned to a full elementary school (K-6) In past years, the boundaries have been changed several times Doug~. Graham, 3330 Chase St , read a 1 etter to the R-l School Board, wri tten by Tom Sl~t!~ry, expressing opposition to closing the school Doroth~Tho~~~, 3014 Chase St , suggested that a look should be taken at hard fiscal data to be sure that money will be saved if Columbia Heights school is closed Also, if the school is closed, an important neighborhood recreation center will be lost Florence Tanner, 3465 Newla~ said that Columbia Heights School has been down- qraded, and become a satellite of Lumberg Bob Olson, 7200 ~I 29th Ave, stated that Mountain View School has been closed 'for a year and will be sold but would like to see the schools retained as a back-up or reserve for the District North Arvada is growing at a fast rate, and children are being bussed already--it would not be bad to bus them a bit farther to bring up enrollment Mrs Cavarra suggested that this could be especially true in new subdivisions thathave not deve loped a "nei ghborhood" Mrs S~ckman said that the School Board thinks the people are anti-bussing and are committed to the concept of neighborhood schools Burton Beebee, 3177 Chase St , felt that the School Board is not interested -, . in input Special Study Session Minutes February 9, 1978 Page -2- ~Pepe suggested that ~Iheat Ridge should have a zoning classification for all school property so that if they are closed--could not be sold--in some cases, the present zoning would allow multiple family dwellings Mr Gish asked Council and Mayor if they would be in next year's task force leadership conference would, so Mr Gish will forward this information interested in participating Concensus was that they MEETING ADJOURNED at 9 30 P m "'~ / l ( L( C ~ ~// k ~/c//~ j", CAROL F HAMPF, CITY CLERK '--Y----?----.
