RESOLUTION NO. 1659
SERIES OF 1998
TITLE.
A RESOLUTION REGARDING THE PROVISION OF CABLE TELEVISION
SERVICES
WHEREAS, TCI is the cable television provider within the City of Wheat Ridge
pursuant to a franchise agreement between the City and TCI, and
WHEREAS, said franchise agreement has expired and is being continued on a
temporary basis while efforts are made to negotiate a new franchise; and
WHEREAS, the pace and tenor of the negotiations indicate the possibility of not
being able to come to a successful negotiated franchise renewal with TCI,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Wheat Ridge city Council that
in order to protect the future cable-related needs and the desires of the citizens of Wheat Ridge,
and to insure that truly competitive cable television services are available within the community,
the City Council directs that:
1 The staff is hereby authorized to commence discussions with adjoining jurisdictions
regarding the possibility and feasibility of joint provision of municipally owned cable
television services; and
2. That the City staffbe authorized to begin the investigation of the purchase of the
existing cable television system or the building of a City owned and operated cable
television system that would function as an enterprise and that would compete with any
privately operated cable television systems.
