TITLE: RESOLUTION URGING THE JEFFERSON COUNTY R-l SCHOOL BOARD NOT TO
CLJSE MARTENSEN, MOUNTAIN VIEW, AND COLUMBIA HEIGHTS ELEME~TARY
SCHOOLS IN WI1EAT RIDGE
WHEREAS, information has been publicized in local newspapers that the
Jefferson County R-l School Board is contemplating the closure of
Martensen, Mountain VieuJ, and Columbia Heights Elementary Schools in
Wheat Ridge as an economy measure; and
WHEREAS, the Martensen Mountain View, and Columbia Heishts Elc~entary
Schools are strategically located structures in the area, ~nd as such,
are important assets to the respective neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, property values of homes in the neighborhoods of the schools
could be adversely affected by their closure, resulting in economic loss to
the citizens there; and
WHEREAS, the closure of these schools would necessitate bussing of students
to other elementary schools which is undesi~able and creates 3dditional
problems for parents and children as well as added cost to the School
District; and
WHEREAS, the neighborhoods are unc1ergoing "radual change by the influx of
younger ~eople who IJill eventually require additional elementary school
facili ties;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Wheat
Ridge that the Jefferson County P-l School Board be hereby urged to re-
consider its tentative plans with respect to the cJosure of these impor-
tant schools in Wheat Ridge; and
RE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the School Board recognize the substantial
impact which a closure decision could have on these neighborhoods and on
the City of Wheat Ridge in general, based on the above factors; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Martensen, Mountain V ew, and Columbia Heights
Elementary Srhools in Wheat Ridge remain open; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to send a
copy of this Resolution to all m~mbers of the Jefferson County R-I School
Board and Superintendent of Schools.
