TITLE:
A RESOLUTION URGING THE COLORADO GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO
ENACT LEGISLATION PROVIDING FOR THE MANDATORY
INSTALLATION AND UTILIZATION OF SEATBELTS OR OTn~~
RESTRAINING DEVICES IN VEHICLES USED IN THE COURSE OF
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
WHEREAS, the Colorado General Assembly has enacted legislation
making the installation into, and utilization while tr~velling in,
private vehicles mandatory, and providing fines and penalties for
violation of said legislation;
WHEREAS, no similar and corresponding legislation is in place
requiring installation and utilization of seat belts within
vehicles utilized in public transportation;
WHEREAS, the need for such legislation, and the resultant
prevention of death and serious injury, has been recently and
unfortunately demonstrated by the accident involving a public
school bus occurring in Boulder County, Colorado;
WHEREAS, the lives and safety of children riding on school
buses, and passengers on other public transportation vehicles, is
a matter of paramount public interest;
WHEREAS, the Wheat Ridge city council, as the elected
legislative body of the City of Wheat Ridge, urges the state
legislature to enact legislation mandating the installation, and
use, of seatbelts and/or restraining devices in public
transportation vehicles, and further urges the Board of Education
of Jefferson county R-l schools to likewise urge adoption of said
legislation;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Wheat Ridge, that
1. The Board of Education of the Jefferson County R-l School
District is hereby urged to propose, support, and promote adoption
of legislation by the General Assembly of the State of Colorado
mandating the installation and utilization of seatbelts and other
restraining devices within school buses and other vehicles involved
in public transportation;
2. The city Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of
this Resolution to the Superintendent of the Jefferson County R-l
School District.
